Re: Any commuters between Helsinki & Turku?

But if you can work on the train then maybe your boss will let you count that as 'work time', and thus reduce the office hours accordingly? Also, if you get a sarjalippukirja and stare straight ahead ignoring the conductor, it can last for months....

Re: America's Domination of the Winter Olympics

New York City has approximately 60% more people than the entire country of Finland. I wonder how a NYC Olympic team would do in the medal count. How would Minnesota do in the Olympics? That state has about the same population as Finland. More people in Wisconsin than Finland; how many medals would ...

You get 10% off if you book seven days in advance, online, but you're right - it's dear if you live up there.

Re: Employer forces to change permanent full-time to part-time.

Tyosuojelu said that employer cannot force anyone to resign if we don't accept the part-time, they have to terminate your contract. shop steward said "basically they can do whatever they want, you will get the new contract automatically. if you don't agree, you resign"... it seems shop st...

Re: can I get SKY tv in Finland??

As mentioned in posts passim, we get better coverage of premiership footy here on http://www.canalplus.fi/sport than on Sky, it´s a monopoly here up to the end of this season (no pissinground like with Sky & Setanta / ESPN)... that may change as a Swedish finance company won the rights for 2010...

You're eligible for British citizenship, I think, so get naturalised and remove the RP requirement.

Re: UK Service Personnel thinking of moving to Finland.

It's not easy, but it's not impossible, and anyone shooting at you will have drunk a lot of alcohol beforehand and will therefore be unable to aim properly. Compared to afghanistan (or colchester, come to think of it), Finland is an alright place. And it's not like you're burning your farmstead befo...

Re: Social Class

Another example is the current PM ... the guy took 15 years to get his Master´s degree ... there´s taking the scenic route and then there´s taking the piss. The fact that his father was an influential professor of political science didn´t open any doors for him, did it? No siree. I can't believe yo...

Re: Social Class

But really, I would never think about anyone's "class", the whole concept seems exotic - and the British society bit bizarre with its myriad little distinctions. Exotic? Never heard it described like that before...... I guess we see things like that because we still have the aristocratic ...

Re: Social Class

I think I can come up with a few vulgar expressions about that  But "showing off with money" is crass, like the Rytsöla brothers and their Lambourghinis... you just don't do stuff like that without being ridiculed. There's different types of vulgarity, though. Vesa Keskinen seems to ...

Re: Recommend Places to Live in Helsinki

Actually reading the OP, he only had one district on the wrong side of the bridge. The others would be fine (don't know ruoholahti, but it's got to be better than espoo), and better than Töölö, if you can afford them.
