Re: Getting a taste of Finnish language and culture by an extended visit? Or perhaps study?
Look - I was not deliberately trying to be negative and sorry if you took it that way. Perhaps my typical Northern European sarcasm does not go down well with Americans, not sure. What I was trying to say, is that based on my long experience of Finland, and I say this without any bias etc., American...

Oh god Yes, drunk Finns will talk to you in bars and clubs and be chatty and friendly. And then you will never see them again, or if you did they would not remember you. You will also find it easy enough to get laid via the same method of chatting to drunken people in bars. Most likely you won't see...

Re: What are valid reasons to request change from joint to single custody in this country
Never, ever give up joint custody of your child. If your ex partner has sole custody then you are no longer a legal guardian. This means that your child can be taken out of Finland without your consent. If your ex partner decided to stay abroad for work or a relationship, it would be a legal battle ...

Re: Londoner considering a move to Helsinki
I can understand that - in your own country it is entirely reasonable to expect to be able to conduct your daily business in the language of that country - be it Finnish, Greek or whatever. The fact that most Finns speak English well is certainly handy for tourists etc., actually it's a prerequisite...

Re: Adaptation of children to school/country (from Netherlan
If your kids do not speak any English, than putting them in the English language school or International school is not anymore useful than putting them in the Finnish language school system - they will pick up Finnish, just as they would need to pick up English if you put them in an international sc...

A cautionary tale - part 2
I posted on this, oh probably 2 years ago now, and I wanted to just "wrap up" for anyone who is interested, or for anyone who is thinking of moving to Finland. The last time, it somehow turned into a sort of argument about foreigners learning/not learning Finnish. Again, this is not a whin...

Re: question about kielikahvila in wider Helsinki area
This is the information I got from an actual Finnish teacher about the kielikahvila thing: Because asylum seekers are not yet approved for residency and do not get the integration package, the kielikahvila is the only free way for them to learn any Finnish at all. (Remember, there is a difference be...

Re: working in tampere?
Hi. I have just finished doing a master's degree in Tampere while living in Helsinki, well Espoo actually. The train takes 1.5 hours if you take the Pendelino one. Sometimes there are offers for 10 tickets at 99euro, but generally the price is about 15e each way. Expensive. Onnibus, a cheap service,...

Re: gift ideas for my girlfriend family
Ha ha, yes I can actually relate to this - I know it's not right to stereotype, but Finns in general don't seem to be the most enthusiastic recipients of gifts! I spent ages picking out a gift of a fairly expensive Marimekko bag for a 70th birthday, which I was not able to attend, but sent on with a...

Iso Omena Library
I need to do a bit of printing and actually don't have my own one here. I checked the Iso Omena Library page and they do say they have laser engraving services as well as 3D printing services, but does anyone know if they have a situation whereby I could go there on a more or less daily basis, sit a...

Continuing this enjoyable rant - http://www.zelene-verige.si/content/images/thumbs/0000195_radic-trzaski-solatnik-500g_415.png This is the salad I really miss. It looks as though it is a mix of separate leaves, but it is sold as "Trzaski Solatnik" or Trieste Lettuce lettuce. The leaves are...

Re: God-awful Tomatoes!
Yeah, the bitterness is exactly what Slovenes love about dandelion - but it does need to be young dandelion, the leaves are not good for your kidneys if they are too old. Great idea about a dandelion lawn!!!!! Dandelion tea is great for a sort of spring cure as it's really high in vitamins, and as a...

Re: God-awful Tomatoes!
Oh sorry - think I misunderstood - saw endive in Prisma (chicory is what it is, also saw red radicchio(??) It's call radic in Slovenia and can be green or red - there are so many varieties of leaves there, I don't actually know all the English names as I first saw those leaves in Slovenia, even in m...
