welcome to finland: you can leave at any time

While living in Finland I once saw a joke about Finnish people's perception of foreigners. "Welcome to Finland. You can leave at any time" Except they are not letting me leave. I have a long term EU residence permit and after moving back to United States tried to get it cancelled with reas...

Re: new law requiring approval from defense ministry to buy land/apartment

Thank you for the link. After reading the law it is not as bad as the yle article makes it out to be. The yle article states that for joint ownership if one of the members is foreign they need permission which is true except if they are married/cohabitating with a EEA citizen where no permission is ...

Re: new law requiring approval from defense ministry to buy land/apartment

Can you give a link to the 10% rule? Let's take Finland as an example country. A foreign national can be 100% shareholder in a limited company and if they are resident in the EEA then no special permission is needed from PRH to be board member or director. new law requiring approval from defense ministry to buy land/apartment

I read yesterday in yle about the new law requiring foreigners to get permission from the ministry of defense to buy property. https://yle.fi/uutiset/osasto/news/permission_needed_for_foreign_residents_to_buy_property_in_finland_from_2020/11043532 Being an American I have an issue with this. If I wo...

fishing in Helsinki

I understand to fish in Helsink I need to pay the 45 euro fee "Fisheries management fee". (Referring to this page: https://www.eraluvat.fi/en/fishing/fisheries-management-fee.html). It says it is ok to fish with one rod with this permit. I see people lure fishing with 3 poles from shore. I...

Re: police interview

It has now been more then 2 years since the issuing date on my new passport. I read the information about statute of limitations and found the following: The time limits relating to the statute of limitations are normally counted from the commission of the criminal act. The operation of the statute ...

Re: police interview

I wanted to post an update on the situation. I finally received a notice from the court to contact them in early June. I did call them and they wanted to schedule an appointment to give me some papers. Since letting my passport expire is a criminal offense they need to hand me the papers in person. ...

Re: police interview

Thanks for the replies. I had not noticed them before as I only checked the day after I posted. I ended up talking with the manager of the officer and they reopened the investigation and said they would provide the translator. I also filed an administrative complaint stating what had happened and th...

Re: police interview

I did a little more reading about the law today and found the following: Law on administrative enforcement established that a person involved in legal proceedings as an interpreter or translator cannot have any involvement to parties in the case, or to the case itself, as such a relationship is a ca...

Re: Driving licence

Some countries have an agreement with Finland and I believe Australia is one of them where you can just switch your license. You have a year from your arrival to make the switch. I think you also need to registered as a resident of Finland. If they see you have been here previously and did not switc...

police interview

I want to vent a little. I just came from a police interview. It was related to my not having valid travel document (passport) while in Finland when my passport was expired for 5 months. I made a not-guilty claim under the EU right to equal treatment since I am a family member of an EU citizen and h...

Re: length/cost of permanent resident card

Here is the final text that I sent to migri which will forward it to the interior ministry. Thank you all for feedback. This letter should be forwarded to the Interior Ministry. Dear sir, I am writing this letter in regards to two separate issues related to implementation of Finnish law and practice...

Re: length/cost of permanent resident card

This is the letter I am working on to submit to the interior ministry should they decide to bring me to court. The interior ministry should first be allowed to correct the issue prior to the claim being filed with the European commission. I will file it anyway if they decide not to take me to court ...
