Re: Rolling my r's.
Rolling a Finnish "r" is actually quite easy, just let it naturally roll from the tip of the tongue. Pull the tongue to behind the upper front teeth, placing the tip of the tongue at the topside of the mouth and then just gently blow, while letting the tip of the tongue vibrate against the...

Anteeksi, I found the original recording but then placed it on my earlier post; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cPMjFJfnhJA

Re: definition of word question
Yes, I can recall the Värttinä song that you mentioned, from many years ago, and I believe the kaira reference in that song was to wilderness. There is a river in southeastern Lappi by the name of Kairijoki and the headwaters, at the highest elevation of that river, begin in genuine wilderness and s...

Re: definition of word question
Kiitos, Jukka! My dictionary is a 1984 WSOY edition of Uusi Suomi-Englanti Suur-Sanakirja of 1.446 pages and I also have its mate edition going from English to Finnish. It is a good dictionary although initially it did take some while for me to figure out how to use it and how to get the most out of...

definition of word question
In Lapland the word kaira translates into English as meaning wilderness, as of out in the middle of nowhere.
But could kairi also translate as meaning wilderness? I can not find sanakirjassa definition of kairi but maybe kairi is a regional variation of kaira spelling?

Re: Buying Indian Rice
Be careful! In USA about 70% of rice is grown in the southern states of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. Yet what are now rice fields were once cotton fields and those cotton fields were sprayed or treated with an insecticide to control a bole-weevil insect population, but that insecticide...

Re: Dual citizen seeking to do military service
I contacted the embassy and after a bit of back and forth, the lady I spoke to recommended I contact the FDF directly so they could answer my more in-depth questions. Simples. You go to the FDF and say that you want to volunteer. The FDF will then determine whether or not you qualify, which you pro...

Re: Dual citizen seeking to do military service
Military service is good for you and is the right thing to do. I did my service in US Army but I am sure that Finnish Army service is quite similar. I enlisted in US Army at age 18, and you at age 18 are perfectly qualified to join Finnish Army. The Army is going to put you through hell, all kinds o...

OK, so you can look anywhere in Finland.
And again, have a look at what Metsähallitus offers.

Re: How do I avoid military service in Finland?
Having a Finnish passport is not only about receiving the benefits but also taking responsibility. You can duck it out until you are 30, or you can do the thing and learn something about yourself and how to function in a rather formal, but also very equal organisation. The minimum service/education...

Re: Buying a mökki
My guess is that MagicJ is not interested in just "survival mode". That is your guess. But a 20 m^2 mökki could support several people, not big but big enough. MagicJ did mention that cost is a consideration, and that his mökki could be a recreational home and not a primary home. Besides,...

Re: Buying a mökki
Mökki (big enough for a family) That all depends on what you consider to be "big enough" for a family. In survival mode, for instance, a 20 m^2 mökki with an upper floor sleeping loft (parvi) and with a ground floor kitchen could do, and that would be very economical. Lakeside sauna + own...
