Re: ADVICE NEEDED_house location_good schooling

I'm late to this - but for what it is worth, my 13 year old attends the IBS in Suurpelto. It's a brand new suburb, brand new and VERY nice school, with very forward thinking activities and schooling. It's quite different from the ordinary Finnish school she attended for elementary in Tapiola. Contra...

Re: Locations for Photography in Helsinki

Lauttasaari has some beautiful beaches to explore - and as an added bonus, if you are there around 5:00, you get the cruise ships drifting by.

Re: where to throw my sofa away

The dump in Espoo is in ammassuo - you can cart it there and for a small price, dump it. We just took our fridge there yesterday - look for the sorting center.

Re: divorce and fighting for child custody

Something to think about: I am a child of divorce and stayed with mother during the week and father on most weekends. For me, as a young child, I treasured the time with my father as much as my mother. I would have lost out had my parents not agreed upon amicable visiting and changing homes. I am gl...

Re: Where are the second hand shops?

Akseli in Mankkaa is really the best of the indoor 'rent a table' places. Clean, upscale, well run. It's about 43e for a week to rent an area two bookshelves wide. I have a table there right now. There is also a new self service consignment like Akseli at the Lansi Keskus in Olari. It's on the secon...

Re: Where are the second hand shops?

Espoo has some excellent second hand stores. Akseli, in Mankkaa, is an upscale type of consigment store. You can find almost anything in there. The Vermo swapmeet at the Vermo racetrack is very large and diverse - but only runs in the Summer months. You can find amazing bargains there. There's a new...

Turku Medieval Faire 6/30-7/3

The Turku Medieval Market and Faire is coming next weekend. It's one of my favorite Summer events and typically features great food and interesting atmosphere.

Re: Relocation companies for US to Finland move

I would use the links Penelope recommended. I moved from Los Angeles to Helsinki several years ago and it was cheaper to arrange it from the Finland side than from the California side.

Re: What to do legally after get married (US citizen)

Hard to remember what I had to do since it has been several years. I know I had to get from the US embassy a notarized copy of a note stating that there are no impediments to the marriage. And I needed to apply for a new passport with the name change. Also be aware that the US is one of the few coun...

Re: A dad prepares for unwanted divorce

Thanks for sharing your experiences. Cory, I've 'known' you online for about 9 years here on FF and I can't tell you how heartbreaking it was to hear about what happened with the divorce. But I also can't say enough about how much respect I have for you in how you rebounded and found your places in ...

Re: Engaged to Finnish person, worries/questions.

The thing about selling artistic work is that you have to charge 22% VAT on top of what you want to get for the items - which makes them very expensive here. Very few foreigners get a job once they are here - expect to be unemployed. And well, if he is having doubts and had a breakdown, clearly ther...

Re: Esteettömyystodistus

It was easy for me - a US resident. I went to the embassy, swore in front of a notary public, paid $25, and was done. Can't imagine the UK one is that much different.

Re: Not Impressed With Finnish Elementary Schools

I think what ticked me off most is that I sat through an hour of the principal talking about their strong anti bullying policies (at the parent orientation before first grade started) and then to have it happen so systematically. Obviously, I didn't sit still and took action. The issue exacerbating ...

Not Impressed With Finnish Elementary Schools

My 7 year old has been at the elementary school here in Tapiola for 3 months now in first grade. In that time, between the school and the aftercare program, she's: 1) Kicked in the stomach, forced on the ground, and then kicked repeatedly by a school mate who laughed through the whole thing 2) had h...
