Re: New Alternative - ?

They don't have to register. In addition to the money that goes to the party the groups in the parliament gets money based on the number of members. They will do fine financially during the term. However, financing a campaign for elections will probably be problematic. Umm.. No. That law was quite ...

Re: Gross to nett salary

Net was about 2600€. The average salary in Finland used to be about 3600€, so my salary was really above the average. With 'average salary' I mean the average salary in Finland in general, not in any particular field. I know that Helsinki salaries are much higher than in the rest of the country. I d...

Re: Gross to nett salary

Imho, 4000 gross is a high salary, it is well above the average. I got that for a short while - in IT fiel, with 16 years work experience. I think I will never get that much again in my life.

Re: Retire in Finland Blog

Joint account used to be quite common (and I believe still are among older people), e.g. me and my hb have a joint account. More common nowadays are separate accounts for salaries and one joint account to pay household expenses. Having only one joint account may cause problems if the other part dies...

Re: Uk citizen buying summer cottage in Finland

When purchasing a property (land, estate), you also need to pay 4% varainsiirtovero, tax for asset transfer. After paying it, you also need to get it officially registered to you, to get a 'lainhuudatus' for it. That costs 119€. Estate purchases need also an official notary present and signing the p...

^That is the tax decision for year 2016. Housing, food, light and heating is considered worth of 490€/month in a single room, and 470€/month in a shared room. I suppose she will get her own room, so the value of the housing etc benefit was 490€/month for year 2016. These taxation decisions are made ...

Re: Car owning and all related costs question

Tyres indeed. It depends on how much you drive. We buy a new set of summer tyres every second year (sometimes every year) and winter tyres about every third or fourth year. If you order them online, check that they are meant for Scandinavian weather. E.g. Mid-European winter tyres are not usually su...

If you fancy some nice free range eggs, you could try Vaahteramäen MunaEggsPress. https://www.facebook.com/groups/827477007270617/?fref=ts I just found out about them, and have not yet tried the stuff, but I've only heard good things about them. They are selling their eggs from a van (or multiple, I...

Re: Potatoes anyone?

Ok, I've found another tasty potato. :) It is called Annabelle. It is currently sold in the local Lidl as 'kesäperuna', we've eaten it several times this summer at the summer cottage as simple boiled potatoes (keitetyt perunat), or paistinperunat on the next day. Today I made some jauhelihaperunavii...

I googled with the words 'vinksin vonksin koira metsään meni', and found the following:

Koira meni metsään
jalat meni vinksin vonksin vinksin vonksin,
koira tuli metsästä
jalat meni sipi sapi sipi sapi

Apparently there are several different version of this dog-tale.

Re: Moving to Finland w/ Continuous RP and Mortgage?

I just cannot believe how expensive apartments can be in Helsinki... That apt would mean about 2300-2700€/month to the bank (more when the interest rates rise) and over 500€/month to the housing company. Lots of renovations still coming this and next year. Plus electricity, which of course is peanut...

Long ago when I studied about everybody made their own breakfast and dinner, uni restaurants served lunch. It is possible that nowadays some of them also serve breakfast and dinner, too. In case they don't, prepare to cook your own meals. You can get simple cooking utensils second hand if needed, or...

Re: Super Market near Biocity

Yes there are. If you look at the map you just linked, you can see 'Prisma Itäharju' on the right below the middle, and K-Citymarket (in this case Kupittaa Citymarket) at the bottom left. Those are more like hypermarkets, though. If you seek for small markets selling mainly food, those are not marke...

Based on these http://www.perunkirjoitus.fi/lesken-oikeudet.html and http://andoms.fi/fi/lakiasiat-yksityisille/lesken-oikeudet I'd say it depends. In these cases the widow cannot stay in the apartment: - If the widow owns an apartment that could be used as his/her home - if the deceased spouse was ...
