Re: Total cost when door key is lost

Does it not depend on the type of apartment, is it owned, rented, Kaupunki rented apartment etc? OP does not say! Exactly!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am gobsmacked. Wild numbers. Start by talking to your landlord (if you have one). The cost might be as little as 15e to have an out-of-patent key copied, or poss...

Re: Opportunity to work in Finland

Luxury. Our family of four lived on far less. Your quoted rent is for some kind of mansion - there's only two of you - even with a baby added, a nice three room apartment is possible for 1000e and not in a shabby area at all. The powers that be claim that the amount required to support two adults an...

Re: Intensive Finnish course

In my experience, Helsingin Kesäyliopisto is a huge classroom doing ONLY grammar without any opportunity for developing speaking and listening skills, and has a lot of repeat students in there because they have completed it already and still don't understand anything the teacher had to say. It's bee...

Re: Residence Permit - Timeline

I do understand that it could be difficult learning the language and I am nervous about that. It does seem that if I take courses and study I should be able to at least get to a basic level within a year. There are classes that are 25 hours a week. Are people taking these classes regularly and stil...

Re: Residence Permit - Timeline

I'll be able to apply at the beginning of July. I'm trying to figure out the timing of it all. I don't know if I want to come back to the US and teach fall semester at the university while I wait Do this one. Seriously, do this one. You can probably safely assume closer to the 9 month range for you...

Re: 2 years requirement to get a phone contract

Interesting that the housing argument was brought brought up, because actually yes, foreigners ARE discriminated against when renting. OP might not be aware of this, but to any intelligent landlord, the newly-arrived foreigner is the last choice for a tenant. They represent a high risk of flight whi...

Re: Unemployment coverage without the Kela card

Chosing to be a martyr? Not at all. It's not leaching off resources I personally feel I am not entitled to. I wonder how many foreigners are actually claiming money through the system? A lot I'm sure. What makes it worse is Finland is in financial difficulty. I am not sure if you have children or n...

Re: 2 years requirement to get a phone contract

The arrogant here is you and your redneck prejudices over immigrants. Get over it, sometimes companies do ilegal things or make discriminations even when the law say otherwise. Just a small clear example. http://yle.fi/uutiset/osasto/news/banks_under_pressure_to_offer_online_banking_to_foreigners/7...

Re: 2 years requirement to get a phone contract

Get over it. You haven't got a legal right to enter into a contract with anyone. What sort of question is this? Can't believe someone is so arrogant that they think they can demand a private company GIVE them a service then trust the bill will be paid later. Don't be ridiculous. If you're foreign, y...

Re: Cost of living in Helsinki as PhD student

Here's one from me: I live alone, and I spend 250 on groceries (alcohol excluded) each week just for myself, and it's almost impossible for me to survive with anything less. Indeed. When I am writing I live alone in Helsinki and I eat VERY simply, and the reality is that my daily nip into the super...

Re: Secretarial studies student looking for a job

It's the crappy economy. People don't go around offering jobs unless you're the bees knees. And in here (and without fluent Finnish) you have to be something seriously amazing before anyone will offer. Like, do you have Oracle skills and eleventy bajillion years of writing Java? etc. tl;dr: the only...

Wow some numbers in here are right and some are out of touch with reality. amm hmm... 40 square metres in Töölö will almost always be 2 rooms, and about 800-900 is correct (1000 in August; maybe 800 right now). yeah yeah http://www.vuokraovi.com/rental-apartment/helsinki/taka-toolo/block+of+flats/5...

Re: EU citizens and Finnish Citizenship

I have two EU citizenships, I took Finnish for emotional, nonsensical reasons :D

But it makes sense now as with Brexit going on my British citizenship might not give me EU residence rights in the future.
