Finnish Cinema

On trips to Finland I aways try to pick up a few Finnish movies on DVD. I have enjoyed all of the Aki Kaurismaki movies I have seen especially 'Drifting Clouds' and 'The Man Without A Past'. Also was very impressed by the incredibly powerful 'Paha Maa/Frozen Land' and liked the biopic of ski-jumper Matti Nykanen's rise and fall, 'Matti'.

Could any Finnish members recommend any other Suomi productions I should seek out??

you can download the star wreck -in the pirkinning, its as indie as you can get, the blokes are doing their next one of nazis from the moon, for action raid (film + tv series)... then theres a few older bits like levottomat and surprisingly fc venus.. best though is nousukausi of the espoo yuppies going on an adventure holiday as unemployed chavs to jakomäki... and then theres vares and vares2 the frozen angel and häjyt ... theres youtube bits of these. also for documentaries get the one of these unemployed mommas boys somewhere up north forget the name... joutilaat, excellent pilurally

need to go check the dvd collection of the place of the war movies if you are into them. theres the road of somewhere and the promise or something and someone is frothing over tali 1944

I have seen a great Finnish war movie called 'Behind Enemy Lines', sorry can't remember the Finnish title

Then there's Käki (Kukushka) which actually is a Russian movie but there are Finnish actors too.

Could any Finnish members recommend any other Suomi productions I should seek out??

I'm not Finnish, but here's what comes to my mind:

"Raja 1918" (from 2007) was excellent in my opinion.

I've seen a few old Finnish films from the 60s which were very charming and funny:
"Kaasua, Komisario Palmu!" and "Komisario Palmun erehdys" (though I liked the former better than the latter).
"Professori Masa" (1950) with Tauno Palo was hilarious too.

Jäniksen vuosi is definitely a great movie.

Personally i thought all the movies mentioned above apart from the Star wreck and Kaurismäki movies were pretty weak. But yeah, that's just my personal opinion.


Miehen työ was quite allright though.

Aideista parhain is not finnish, there is no aiti in finnish. There is äiti (mother) so äideistä (from all mothers) parhain (best, bit old way to say) is finnish.
Ä is not same as A We do understand if you dont have ä in your keyboard and use a instead but its not right. Like näin ja nain, i saw and i fuc... There is difference

It was a cut'n'paste straight from the movie file (yes it was downloaded). Google seemed to find it fine (using cut'n'paste)... as did IMDB... not sure why you guys had so much trouble really.

PS as previously discussed, it's not really a Finnish movie... most of it is in Swedish as it's about a Finnish kid sent to Sweden during WWII.
