Re: Finnish Cinema
@jelle Are you Finnish? All my Finnish friends trash Finnish movies. Aku Louhimies told the FT (in last year's survey on Finland) about the time Paha Maa was premiered in Sweden. After the film the Finnish ambassador told him that there was EVERYTHING he hated about Finnish cinema in that film and he wished Finns would stop making films "like that"jelle wrote:Jäniksen vuosi is definitely a great movie.
Personally i thought all the movies mentioned above apart from the Star wreck and Kaurismäki movies were pretty weak. But yeah, that's just my personal opinion.
Another film to check out is "Kites Over Helsinki". Set in 70s-80s Helsinki about some Hanken Golden Boys in their prime. Caustic look at Old Money in the city. According to my dh it is a good representation of the privileged youth of those years.

Finnish movies are usually not so well-written. There are very few ( if any ) good script writers in Finland. Two examples of lousy scripts :
"Kaivo" ( The Well ) : http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0104588/
and "Da Capo" : http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0088980
You should not make a movie if you do not have an interesting story to tell. I wish someone would tell that to Pekka Lehto.

... is next week.
A selection of Aku Louhimies' films are showing this year including: Käasky, Valkoinen Kaupunki, Kuutamolla, Paha Maa and Juna, all with English subtitles. Levottomat with Swedish subtitles. There are a few other Finnish films showing also with English subtitles such as Musta Jää (Kotwica, 2007), Thomas (Soini, 2008),Tummien Perhosten (Karukoski, 2007). Full programme and ticket sales on the website. Most films sell out before the night, so don't turn up without a ticket. Most of the films are showing in regular theatres / conference halls so the seats are uncomfortable and the sound is pretty bad. It is worth queuing early to get a front seat (especially if you need to read the subtitles).

OH, no, no don't see valkoinen kaupunki unless you want to trundle home afterwards and off yourself! Admit that the technical movie making bits are very well done, but it's so damn depressing. Then again, all of you who like to trash finnish women, well, this one has a major suomen nainen susi if you don't get enough of them in perons.penelope wrote:http://www.espoocine.fi

Re: Finnish Cinema
Well, not finnish myself but in addition to some of the ones mentioned above, I recommend:Seinajoki Comet wrote:Could any Finnish members recommend any other Suomi productions I should seek out??
talvisota - about the winter war, if you're interested in Finland, you really can't go without it.
kummelin jackpot - a finnish movie that isn't depressing! It's practically a hollywood production
pahat pojat small town boys up to no good
geez I've got 3-4 more in mind but don't remember the titles and spell too poorly to find them on web
Anyway, I've rented/seen all of the above with english subtitles.
