Boxes of tissues in Finland

Post by Lperalta » Sun Dec 04, 2011 3:40 pm

Hello everyone,
Does anyone know if tissues in boxes are sold in Finland?
We are hosting a student from Espoo who claims she has never seen them sold anywhere.
She said they are sold in small pocket size packs only.
Thanks
Lynne

Some place must sell them because restaurans ladies rooms have them. I usually just buy them packed in plastic. I guess there is 100 or 200 tissues in one package, I have not checked. Then they sell those little pocket size packages, also packed in plastic. I have one package in every purse. I guess she means those. She must come from a family who don´t have runny noses.

The boxed ones are more typically sold as “facial tissues”.

A “standard” Finnish tissue pack looks like this, but it’s definitely not “pocket-sized”. (See here and here as well.) You usually rip the pack open along a perforated edge and keep the tissues inside the plastic wrapping, disposing of the wrapping only after it’s empty.

But I guess there are pocket-sized packs as well...

She may be talking about Kleenex Mansize tissues http://howtoplayhouse.files.wordpress.c ... g_0530.jpg which in fairness do come in a huge box and are apparently 30cmx30cm :)

Have never seen them here - but that could just be because they are on the top/bottom shelf in the supermarket so I have never noticed them. Certainly, they are not mainstream product here, as Jukka Aho explained. We just buy the pocket sized packs.

Ahh, no... you got it the wrong way. OP is checking up on their host student if she is telling the truth or not that you can't buy US style (Kleenex) tissue boxes here. Yes, you can, but as others have said it's really not something that is generally sold, so most would not even notice it... or even if they see it, not realize what it is, as it's not something that is used here. So I wouldn't be at all surprised if the student hadn't seen them here. (I've seen them sold in Stockmann's... but I knew what they were.)

So... OP... why are you checking up on what your student claims? My host mother didn't ever really believe what I said about Finland, and it used to drive me absolutely nuts! Sun rises late and sets early during the winter, so that it is rising when I go to school and setting when I come home... nope, not buying it. That we actually had a microwave oven at home (this was late 80's) and that I had used one before... nope, not buying that one either (in her mind Finland was very close to a 3rd world country). Very nice to basically call me a liar!

I have never seen them sold here in normal shops, they are certainly not normal.
We all use the pocket sized tissues.

She is telling the truth

Is CityMarket not counted as a normal shop? I'd say its pretty normal. I have no clue what they cost but my wife buys those boxes all the time from citymarket. They were in Kirkkonummi, and are in Sello and Iso Omena. So I'd imagine them to be fairly normal.

But I will admit its not as a usual thing as in the US though.

You should read my mail... I said that I have never seen them, not that they were not there... but in UK you see the boxes everywhere in people's homes, here I have not seen them in people's homes. I think they are not as common as in say the UK, and the little pocket tissues are the norm here.
