Being pregnant in Finland - experiences
See now, the old witch was right: you were pregnant. Congratulations!
Sure it is normal. What could they do? Just do the test you already did yourself. They used to call you in right away just to verify that the test was right, but nowadays the do-it-yourself tests are reliable, and don´t need a second test just to verify the result. You are – like I already said – just pregnant, not sick. That is what she meant with Mother Nature.

Hi and congrats on your baby to come!
If you still want to hear some experiences...well that's mine..
I am not Finnish but lived the last and a half final trimester of my first pregnancy here and gave birth here...
Negative things: I think indeed that women are not followed up very much (gynecological check up not automatic, only one 5 weeks after u gave birth, the rest is your own matter)
Positive: I have a wonderful nurse at neuvola but I have to fish for good guidance, she doesn't tell things systematically (e.g. how long to give vitamin D to baby)
Hospital cost: you pay for your stay at the hospital only which is 26 Eur/day if you share a room, maximum, 4 mothers in a room as much as I know, or 52 Eur/day in a family room, you, your baby and husband only!
Good guidance on breast-feeding -where i come from they don't even try to convince women to breast-fee, baby formula is just THE thing-
uuum if any other question, please pm meh as I might forget to come back and check the thread.
All the best for the rest of your pregnancy!

Sorry to hijack your thread Gigi! Congratulations on your pregnancy!
I am also pregnant, 6 weeks it seems. So far so good (no morning sickness yet). Anyway I am currently in France and will be until September 7th. Should I already call neuvola to take an appointment for when I come back or should I take an appointment here in France?

Hi Gigi!
Great to hear that all is going well for you and that you enjoyed meeting the midwife/nurse at your Neuvola! You must keep posting on updates on how things are doing, it would be nice to read!
I'm 36 weeks pregnant tomorrow and within the next 1-5 weeks our baby will be arriving into the World! I'm so excited and have loved being pregnant, even in spite of all the twinges, tiredness and other minor ailments! All very worth it in the end!
All the best to you!

Congratulations Gigi and others moms-to-be!!!
I am reading this forum for last few weeks but have never posted. Actually registered only now to the forum.
I live in Rovaniemi and sounds like really in the country side or at least really far from you all. Anyonw else here in Rovaniemi?
But thank you for the very useful experience stories as they are very relevant to me too.

Hello everyone,
I am in my 9th week now, working overseas on a project, but based in Finland.
What would i need to do now really ? I have gone for my checks here locally, but i have no idea what to do when i return to Finland in November. And the worst matter is that my boyfriend will not be able to be with me unless we find a way to get residence permit for him.
Well, for now i have to figure out on my own. Can anyone advise what would be the thing i should do now, and what i should do when i get back to Finland ?
Also, does KELA provide some form of assistance ?
Br,
kiana

Hi Kiana,
if I were you I would contact Kela, your neuvola from your Finnish hometown and also your ammattiliitto-mies/nainen. Because I suppose you want to benifit from the social security system in Finland when you come back to Finland (eg. äitiysraha, kela-package, ...) but there are certain rules for that (been to doctor in Finland before the end of your 4th pregnancy, living 180 days in Finland before giving birth, etc...) So I am wondering how things will be for you!
And about your boyfriend.... I am not a specialist at all concerning residence permits, but make sure your boyfriend recognises the baby officially before the birth. It was make things easier.
Hi Sinti,
Not from Rovaniemi... but also from the countryside! How far pregnant are you?
