Interesting debate here people... and thanks to Rip
Rip wrote:it is legal (http://www.kko.fi/44726.htm ) if done in by proper medical personnel. It's also very rare here for without religious (or actual medical) reasons, so I'd consider still it one more time. As to where you can do it, I do not know. Google search seems to result clinics in Estonia. Maybe a polite inquiry to the local Jewish congregation might help....
I did found out it is legally accepted in Finland. Just need to look for where to have it done in Oulu area. Don't know of any Jew who can help around here. AND I am not a Jew or Muslim... It isn't done generally in Finland but it is elsewhere.

Before I forget, thanks Hee for your reports. You don't need to go that far & yes it is done generally in the US/UK even if US/UK are not in this part of the world ;) Plus I asked where it could be done and if it is legal here

I once more advice you to seriously reconsider.

You said "it is not generally done in Finland but elsewhere". Your elsewhere is extremely limited area. It is limited to USA, UK , Israel (and even there to Jews) and parts and portions of Islamic world.

Practice is rather rare and it is dying out as it offers no real benefits but does offer many counterproductive effects.

Furthermore, as practice for reasons besides medical need are unheard of in Finland, you are essentially turning your son into a freak.
If you do not move to area where this barbarism is still practiced, in Finland your child WILL be seen naked by his schoolmates.

You should carefully think which is best for your child, not what you want.

Circumcision does not offer your son any proven benefits, but has full potential to be source of great deal of anguish.

Medical and cultural issues aside, yes please reconsider. Finland is one of the most naked countries in the world, mainly from its sauna culture. Kids are also cruel, and if you're child is even slightly different for being "foreign", he is already exposed to being bullied. Add in some genital mutilation and you will make him an object of ridicule. Kids are already inquisitive enough about genitalia, no need to make the poor boy an object of discussion and gossip in the classroom.

Not getting into the argument of whether there are health benefits etc., it's been thrashed to death on this thread. But, I would not agree that anyone in Finland who has it done is a "freak". As I said already on the thread, my SO (Finnish) is fully "done", and is not a freak, nor did he ever have any problems or have anybody making him feel like a "freak" at school or otherwise, and due to the (lovely) Finnish sauna culture, people are naked with each other rather often.................

Nor are all those who have freckles or glasses teased, but having such clear deviations from "norm" are going to be parts which will make you more likely to be picked on. Specially since your hubby is Finn born and bred.

As said by KK earlier, kid already has potential "handicap" in being foreigner. Adding more water to the mill will not make life for him easier.

We are speaking of something that cannot be easily undone if things go badly. Kid has to live with it for rest of his life.
This is the same issue as with parents who want to give their kids "cool" names. Never bothering to think 7-8 years forward and consider what kind of opening such ill thought thing can give to potential bullies.

Benefit of child should always come before any fancies of parent.

Ok, I take the point of not deliberately making your child "different" etc., but, I wouldn't have thought that people go around scrutinising penises to such an extent. I'm a nurse and I've seen loads, but to be honest, I hardly recognize the difference myself.

Ain't it just like any other cosmetic surgery? If it is well done it looks almost natural.

ha, had to laugh at this , i,m also a nurse and find the same thing you dont really see any difference, sometimes i wonder tho is it just because we are so used to seeing them or that people really dont look at them so closely, personally I think people just dont really look at them as much as men would like to think their manhoods are irrisistable.

No you didnt found out that its legally accepted in your case since you arent jew or muslim and dont have medical reasons. There havent been high court decision on case like yours so you can assume its still assault.

Of course no adult will comment, I couldn't recognise my mates' cocks from a line-up, even if offered a million euros!

The issue some of us raised was bullying at younger ages. :D You know, when kids are more inquisitive!

Just wanted to put my 2 cents in. I am circumcised. My mother is catholic (father jewish) and it was my mothers decision. I thank her so much for this. I went to a major U.S University in the nineties and oh boy, would the males that weren't circumcised be made fun of by the females. No females I knew would touch a guy with foreskin. It was "gross to them". They just laughed that these guys had cheese growing their lol. I'm sorry but have any of you seen a porn lately (yes my wife and I watch lol) that doesnt show a circumcised male? The pleasure zone is exposed and I personally am all for it! Cant complain one bit lol :D I respect the Finnish culture so dont get me wrong. As they say "when in Rome do as the Romans". My Finnish wife wouldnt let our son be circumcised. Oh well so be it. I just see in all of the newspapers of all the young Finns leaving Finland for a better life. With no disrespect to any Finns at all, I just hope my son has the opportunity to have as many sexual experiences as I did growing up if he moves back to the US. I KNOW girls wouldnt have touched me if I was not circumscized. Yes I know the world doesnt revolve around the US but I wish my son luck with his skin. And yes it is so superficial blah blah, but that is the truth to me and all of my friends. I have 300 friends on Facebook and the VAST majority of them go for circumcision. So who is right, I dont know... Cheers

I think it is a fad that started in the English-speaking countries during Victorian times. No European woman would see a foreskin as something strange. That is the norm, not an exception.

Did it cross your mind that maybe Finnish girls might look on this the other way? Not saying they would, but you have clearly demonstrated for us all that "discrimination" exists against those who have a different willy. Just adds weight to the question, "Why the fook would you want to circumcise your child in a country where it is not the norm".

You are pretty rude Karhunkoski. That is why I left Finland Forum many months ago but have returned to the same BS. Man we havent spoke in months but this Finnish life is making you harder by the day. I tried to be very diplomatic by my response before but you just role your eyes. Thank god I have a hot Finnish wife who eventually wants to move back to the good ole US of A.
