Hey folks,
We want to visit Finland this February, and are looking to get kids started on cross-country skiing (2.5 and 5 at that point). Are there any English speakers friendly schools which can help us to get going? In the ideal world, that'd be dropping kids off for a class and going on a trail for an hour or two, living in our own house with a sauna, and driving around to see the country - but any ideas are welcome.
Thanks!

Whereabouts in Finland? Ski resorts might have some courses available. Most skiing Finns haven't had any formal training, beyond what their parents may have shown them. It's more akin to ice-skating rather than e.g. swimming, you probably will fail (fall) quite a few times but it won't kill you, and soon enough you will get a hang of it.

Re whereabouts - not sure really, we've never been to Finland.
Re training - OK I guess we can try to make do (I'm reasonably confident but didn't really ski for the last 12 years), but it still would be nice to have some infrastructure - like multiple trails, especially those for inexperienced skiers, ski rental, etc.

Ylläs has a great ski school and lots of trails. They mostly handle downhill but are very good with cross country too.

"Visit Finland" is a somewhat broad concept, therefore I assumed that you had already narrowed down the region, based on what you'd like to see and do (probably not only ski). If you're planning to travel around in a car, hopefully you have some winter driving experience.

So from logistics perspective, we'd prefer to stay with car reach of Helsinki - while there are flights to Ivalo from London, timing is fairly hostile.FinnGuyHelsinki wrote: ↑Sat Nov 03, 2018 7:00 pm"Visit Finland" is a somewhat broad concept, therefore I assumed that you had already narrowed down the region, based on what you'd like to see and do (probably not only ski). Winter driving... Not a lot, will have to be careful.
