That is not what they mean by interruption. Based on the new legistlation you can apply (4 years A+24 months B). However if there was a time where you were without a permit then that resets everything.

If you had a valid permit whole time (or at least an application submitted in time being processed) then it is continuous, whether A or B.

Short holidays are not subtracted out of the residency period (surely this reads on the Migri pages as well?)
