Teaching English

Post by dave1974 » Sat Aug 13, 2005 1:58 am

Hi all

Does anyone have any info on teaching English in Finland. Are there any particular organisations people register through etc? Any help from English speakers with experience in this area would help a lot. Has anyone advertised privately, if so how or where and what are the average fees for this kind of work? Anything appreciated:)

Cheers, Dave

Depends totally on your experience and qualifications. This subject has been flogged to death, so search there ought to be a long article, IIRC by Dusty_bin but I'm not 100% sure.

You need atleast a masters with preferably an RSA or a DELTA to teach English in Finland and non-teaching business related experience is a plus.

Look for bohica's article either on here or on here: http://www...com

Basically, just send your CV (if you have one) to any language school (look in the yellow pages or use the search engine on here) and expect circa 20-23 euro an hour (gross) per teaching hour - you will probably be asked to work freelance as language schools don't "employ" teachers any more these days.

Or/and, you can go the self-employed route and set up your own TMI and charge more but you get to do your own paperwork (ALV etc) and you finance your own marketing costs.

Good luck.

You need at least a master's degree to teach at a school, but to work for a private language company usually TESL cert. is sufficient, and sometimes it is enough to simply be a native speaker. It depends on the employer and how badly they need teachers, depends on the region of Finland where you live.

I was trying to be sarcastic. As Hank says, this subject has been flogged to death both here and on the mysterious http://www...com

Just be active and send your cv to many places and place ads on places like the British Council etc. Good luck, I'm sure you'll find something!

Otherwise you can always live off on your girlfriend's student grant;)
