So you had choice at the beginning of the year to decided if you want to pay the higher rate for the part of monthly income that is above about 2000€ (and lower rate for the part of the below it also in December and January) or if you want you pay only the lower rate until you hit the annual limit at 24 000€ - and you choose the latter one and then complain when your net income drops after you hit the annual limit? They as far as explicitly state in the tax office latter that accompanied the tax card that they do not recommend this option for most people, but you do it anyway and then (instead of being prepared) seem to be surprised wit the situation at the end of the year.

(and if the 24 000 limit was well off from your actual estimated income, you could have asked for another card with higher limit (and bit higher base percentage)

Just a week or so ago I posted something on here because I'd received a new tax assessment and was wondering about the reason for the 2 % withholding tax reduction per annum although they'd calculated an income (based on my 2009 tax year) 5K more.

I called and had a lovely chat with the lady in the tax office.. I must say, btw, that these people have a wonderful customer service sense about them. In the end, it was my decision to increase my withholding tax rate even though I have a lot of deductions. It is my choice and I quite enjoy the extra few hundred euro at the end of the following tax year.

And for the OP... you have until the end of January to call the tax office to ask about whether you owe taxes on the previous year. This will save you paying interest on the tax that you owe.

Though for the first 10 000€ of additional taxes the charged interest is minimal (you can get more if you keep it in a suitable bank account):

From time to time, I have checked this website and value the insight and opinions of those that regularly offer up advice, and point us in the right direction concerning info available in previous links. Saying that, I find a lot of negative out there as well, and maybe more so on another website--your post listing notorious and racist immigration--actually had me reviewing my own recent comments about my other native country Canada.

I believe Finland's immigration department conducted an honest and fair appraisal in my case (sponsoring my husband), and did it very quickly. (about one month and a half) application sent via an overseas embassy. Possible negatives would have been; My husband is a native of a muslim country, younger than I...and we were married abroad whilst living overseas together. I am not a current resident of Finland, however I am a dual citizen with Canada. Positives would have been; I am a registered professional in my field of health care, my husband is a business degree holder, both of us have a good amount of working life ahead of us. No dependents, and are willing to do what it takes to integrate. Both of us are avid world travelers, and culturally sensitive. So all in all, I am very happy with Finland immigration, and the treatment and response from embassy staff overseas and their interactions with us. In fact, to be honest, I have to say I may have with my Canadian ways, been a little too overbearing and pushy initially with my questions, and way. They were kind, and to the point, and addressed all our concerns, in a timely and honest fashion. This has been our individual case, I understand there are many others who feel their treatment was different.

Things to consider, once your in a country, (ie. sponsoring from within) things generally take longer, and the process is often more of a difficult one, even here within Canada. A fellow forum member..posted, something about length in US...!! That is a good point...because all in all...the process is beginning to take years. So, if someone wants to be a member and a valued part of a foreign society, the best we can do is attempt to understand its processes, respect that it takes time...evaluate which way of doing things is better, in order to fast track things for ourselves, and stick with that plan and see it through. My husband could have gotten a Schengen Visa and registered inside Finland to apply, we opted out of that, looking at the potential pitfalls, and concerns that might arise from the point of view of the assessors. So, we chose to wait it out, and were prepared to wait however long it took.

I did not even contemplate sponsoring him in Canada due in part to my own concerns about Immigration and potential racism that may or may not exist in cases like ours. (so I too, have at times been someone who would think those kinds of things, that as my husband would say; are "all doom and gloom". It would have been easy to go the route of staying here in Canda, since I am well established, lived most of my life here, BUT I faced the fact that for us to begin to live together doing things properly (as we did for Finland), it would take more than one and half years and a potential huge struggle to prove the validity of our marriage. I am sure you would all agree that this is too long to be away from the one I love.

I am proud of this country Finland,(my mother's native country) that opened its doors wide for my husband and I am so sure that my grandfather who is long gone and served in WWII and was also a POW....would be proud to see one of the family go back and rebuild the legacy he left behind long ago...and post war, it was not by choice but to survive. He and my grandmother ended up a foreigners in a strange land, that also embraced them as Finland now embraces my husband and I. Canada gave birth to his family which grew to be over 100 strong from this one courageous man.

There are many others like him, who helped Finland become the player it is on the world stage today in terms of quality of life/education/freedom, my grandfather's back carried much of the weight of this entitlement that some feel they are owed, and have not earned. The whipmarks spoke volumes to me, and I ask all of you here, to understand that sometimes we have to take a step back, evaluate, and though we might suffer in the interim, if it is meant to be...it will.

Before I go...Let me just say this..."We are all brothers and sisters who share this great world of ours", war brought borders and divisions...only peace, love and respect will tear them down.

With great respect, for all things Finn...Good Luck, and do your best, in this dreary time of year....to remain optimistic.
Be thankful for your health, and the fact you live in a place that will do their best to assist you if you get sick.

I was looking for a thread to attach this article to, so I've bumped up this one:

http://www.vancouversun.com/business/fe ... story.html

Interesting article....and now a study by someone with at least a modicum of credibility.....but I didn't need a study to tell me this...it is simply intuitive...

We all "know"if you come from China, Pakistan or an African country the chances are high that you are a fraud. A fact...not racism.

But I don't think Finnish immigration needs to be told this....just the "flower hats"...
