When I was looking into these things, I was told (by the maistratti people) that they supply witnesses (if you let then know in advance, otherwise it may be your problem) except on Friday afternoons (the goons go home early).
The witness can really be anyone who can show valid id, bring some friends or good colleagues along and buy them a beer afterward. This is what we did. Our witnesses also took a bunch of pictures of us while we were at the maistratti, that is a bonus of bringing some friends along.

Thanks guys (Kutiittaa, Pursuivant, Interleukin, Rinso, Zwagger) for the great advice and time. We got married, and I applied the residence permit with all the details about our relationship (when we met etc) , but no e-mails or no pics as proofs . First the police said they'd give me 5-year residence permit. But a month after that, I got only 1-year residence permit. Which is a bit annoying, because we met 7 years ago, he traveled couple of times to visit me in my country and then I came to Finland and I've been living together with my husband for almost 2 years, and I've been working during those years in Finnish.. but still I get 1-year RP. There's no difference between me, and other Non-EUs who just met their spouse once, and get married, they also have 1-year permit.

Aaanniwaayyy.. perhaps I'm just complaining, I just need to come back there next year..and do the same thing with the forms and I will get the RP (hopefully it'll be for 5 years)

1. Everyone starts off with a 1 year permit

2. There is no such thing as a 5 year permit.

3. Max permit time is the 'extension permit' and it's up to 4 years (or if your passport is going to expire within that time, it's up to the date it expires).

Be grateful you even get to stay.

hi, Kutittaa.. or perhaps the police was saying to my husband it was 4 year permit, perhaps he just forgot & told me it was 5 year permit. He is never good in details.
well.. at least I didn't need to provide any proofs and no interviews is required, and I got the permit in less than a month

That's the fastest I've ever heard of.. for me it took 2 and a half months without an interview and I considered that fast. When I come back I'll see how long the second one takes.

Though mind you, I am not sure if I believe you. This thread was posted in November sometime.. you only just came here now to say that you got your permit... given the fact that you probably would have applied at the end of November, many permits can take 3-4 months or more... so..... not sure what to think.
