Helsinki !!???!

Post by shellynyc » Mon Apr 05, 2004 8:08 pm

This site looks like it could really help me!

I am graduating college in May 2004 and want to move to helsinki for the summer or maybe longer. My boyfriend lives and works there and i want to maybe take some classes and definatly work. As of right now i dont have a student visa or a working permit. Can i still find some kind of work there to make some money until i figure out if im going to stay. Does anyone know of any american company that are out there that i can apply to work for? Can i apply late to summer class's for instance when i get there
thank you,
lost in New yok [/b]

McDonalds comes to mind. :)

Hope you can find something better than that though. What is your background?

Helsinki Summer University runs lots of month long classes that start at the beginning of each month- I think you can enrol up until the start time assuming there are places (I hope so- I am planning to do this when I move to Helsinki in May) I can't remember the link offhand but Google should help

Here is the link to Helsinki Summer School.

I think you are American..that means no work permit no work. (not even at MacDs) There are many USA companies here but they also have to play by the rules and will want to see a work permit.
You can come for 3 months on a tourist visa.
A student visa is valid for the lenght of the course unless you fail an exam and get booted off the course..then your visa is no longer valid.
For EU citizens of course the door is always open.

If you have a student visa then you can work for up to 20 hours per week and during the summer holidays full time. I don't know if a student visa would be issued for somebody doing summer school courses as they don't lead to a recognised degree or other qualification.
