Well she's expecting the outcome of the Finnish-style "nasty note" they send to mothers out of wedlock where the father has to come and sign before witnesses to then be held liable for child support etc, lest the kid becomes a ward of the county. (the county's a stingy dad, they pay only the minimum, but they don't go deadbeat). So its all with pomp & ceremoney that, as we really don't have "birth certificates".

Ah, ok, thanks for explaining the Finnish system - that makes sense. As far as I'm aware there is no English equivalent, so how this gets resolved I don't know. I did say I'd contact the Finnish Embassy in London, but she told me to wait for her email. Guess I'll find out one day :)

Hah! What do you know? That day is today...

"Because there isn't any certificate of establishing a paternity, I can't register David to be Maija's father in our system.
But if you get any legalized document later, we can register paternity then."

What a faff. Oh well. Perhaps I don't even care if he's registered as the father, then ??

About the same amount of fun I'll face if I'd ever need to provide a "birth certificate"... I've got one out of the hospital stating my mom had a kid that got inoculated and then a hand-written one with jebus and kids stating I was a-named... but its a "paper that does not exist"...
