We've not yet finalised the logistics of our move but if we don't use a professional company, we'll be hiring a truck and paying a couple of mates to drive it across. Any interest for the return journey?

Check very carefully the insurance documents of any hired truck to make sure you are covered to take it "to and from UK/Finland". Some only give cover in the country where the hire takes place...could be a bit of a pain if you get stopped at the cross channel check and the documents dont cover you.

Thanks for that. Good to see you back on the forum, I am always interested to read your comments.
Of the hire companys I've been speaking to, they have all made it clear whether or not their vehicles were covered for this.

I hope this does not turn into a '1050 things you can do with an empty truck', but this is what I suggest: Fill it with Salmiaki, rye bread and Finnish coffee - then sell it to Finns living in the UK! You could also buy a car tax free from here and transport it back in the lorry. You will be sure make a saving.

How much have you calculated that this drive will cost? How much stuff will you bring along with you?

We are still chasing quotes for hiring a 7.5 tonner.
Contents of a 2 bedroom flat + 2 motorbikes.
We are also still waiting for more reasonable quotes from Shipping Companies. Pickfords quoted us £5,000!

One of the bikes is going to a mate, he's buying it and dealing with the import tax, the other one needs a bit of work before it goes back on the road, but I know insurance is going to be a costly exercise.
