exemption from coverage under US Social Security

Post by mshamber » Tue Mar 15, 2005 11:47 am

Hi,

I am self-employed American in Finland. In order to be exempt from the self-employed person tax in US I need to get proof that I have paid pension insurance in Finland.

http://www.ssa.gov/international/Agreem ... rtificate2

"A certificate of coverage issued by one country serves as proof of exemption from Social Security taxes on the same earnings in the other country."

I sent the letter as recommended on the US website under "Certificates for self-employed persons" to the Central Pension Security Institute. They returned the letter saying that "They are not quite sure what you mean by your letter"

I am drafting a response today pointing out the US web site. Has anyone dealt with this?

I had my Finnish friend at work call the Pension insurance office and explain the situation. I am now getting a letter stating that I pay pension to Finland.

They don't deal with this type of situation that often.
