Time frame of registering at the maistraatti after arrival

I am a student of Aalto university and will be arriving in Espoo, Finland on 31st August.

I wanted to ask how much time do we have to register at the maistraatti after arriving in Finland? I have my university orientation the very fist week after my arrival and i was thinking if it is possible to register at maistratti after one week of arrival?

Question:- why go to the maistraatti first and not the Police?

Why police? Op should have RP when s/he comes here. He needs to visit police in a year for renewal, but I can't see reason to see them now.
