So what is the average cost of auto insurance in Finland? Does it vary widely from company to company?

Depends on the car and where you live at. Car engine size etc. Differences, of like 5% is not in the mandatory traffc, but the sensible moose/theft/fire/collision prices; also if you have homeowners+other 9insurances you get a discount from them all, so its maths then.

The insurance cartel makes sure that premiums are almost identical from one company to the next. FYI, the system here is that you get "bonus" deductions for each year you have driven without a claim. Therefore, if you are lucky enough not have had any claims for at least a year or more, GET a letter from your insurance company stating this. Pohjola, the insurance company we use here, gave us full credit for the claimless history stated in the letter.
Good luck with the move,
Ron
