Terminating employment / Visa questions

Post by ptubell » Fri Jul 22, 2016 11:24 am

Hi, I'm an american working in Finland under a specialist work permit. What exactly is the process if I terminate my employment? What I would like to do is leave my employment, travel through Europe for around 2-4 months, and then leave Europe. Anyone know what exactly the process is when you terminate your employment? I read somewhere that you have a 90 day period where you can remain in Finland to find a new job, but what happens after that? I have the impression that once I leave my job, I get that 90 day period, and then after that (somehow) some kind of deportation process must start? Would I have to leave immediately on day 91, or do I have to talk with the police and make arrangements to leave within some period of time? Once the 90 days are over, am I allowed to travel within the schengen area for another 90 days under a tourist visa?

I couldn't find any other posts about this, hopefully someone has some insight.

Thanks!
-P

Your residence permit can be cancelled.

You would still have 90 days as tourist after revocation or expiration of your permit. It probably wouldn't happen fast enough that you couldn't do the couple months. Your problem is that the 90 day tourist rule still applies even with residence permit.

"If you have been granted a residence permit for Finland, you may travel in the Schengen area without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180 days period."

Yes, you don't have to overstay because you risk having a Schengen ban.
