Container shipping from Finland to UK

Post by mpjacko » Sun Jan 22, 2017 11:40 am

Hi everyone.

I am looking for some update information about shipping containers. I am moving back to the UK from Finland and I am looking at cost for moving household goods in a container via sea. The plan would be to load the container in Helsinki and collect at a UK port.

Does anyone any any recent experiences with shipping from Finland to UK or UK to Finland?

thanks

Yes, plenty, both directions - between Finland and most of Europe, including the UK. Continually for the past six years in fact, although the removals / art transport company that I work for has been in business for a lot longer.

Cool

So far, the two main options are to drive a 3.5 tonne van myself (although i am struggling to find a company in the UK which hire vans to use in Europe) or hire someone / company to take the stuff for me. The latter will be around 5k€.

The other option if via sea in a container and so it would be good to see if it is any cheaper.

Any suggestions on who i should contact? Does you company do the via sea option or is it road only?

If you have the cash available, would you consider buying a freshly serviced and MOT'd van in the UK which you can sell on again when you return with your belongings? 2.5-3 grand would have you in a fairly cleanLWB high roof transit with MOT. Don't bother bringing large furniture and pack carefully and it'd likely get the job done for you for a couple of grand total out of pocket expense, once it's sold on.

Alternatively you could look for a registered commercial vehicle trader/dealer who would rent a van to you if you paid a deposit sufficient to cover the value of the vehicle if it's not returned.

Essentially you 'buy it' and if it's returned to the seller within 14 days (or whatever you agree) in the same condition etc, you'd be refunded the purchase price minus an agreed amount for 'restocking', if they don't specifically 'do' rentals.

You'd save yourself thousands if you can work something like that out. A quick look on ebay.co.uk turned up this as an example of the kind of van I'm suggesting:

It's in Cannock, so not exactly ideal in terms of location, but you get the idea.

Where on earth are you getting that 5k from, a tiny load such as would fit in a 3.5 tonne van should be much (much!) less than that. Something doesn't add up here.

I suggest that you google keywords like "Muuttopalvelut eurooppaan". This should lead you to a company or companies that do these things seriously and on a scale such that even small jobs like yours are economical for all parties.

Hi, did you get anywhere with this? I am looking to make the opposite journey and have about 35 cubic metres in the Uk sitting in storage.

I moved to Finland a few years ago and at the time got my whole house contents delivered by road freight for 1500 quid. Unfortunately that freight company has been taken over and the new company no longer deals with private individuals. I'll be damned if I will pay the 4000 to 8000 pounds I am being quoted online for such a small load so I am thinking shipping containers but I am getting nowhere with Google.

Have you tried actually talking to a removal company that specialises in this sort of business? 4k sounds to me to be well off the top end of what I'd expect, although you don't say whereabouts in the UK you are.

35cbm wouldn't leave much space in a normal rigid truck but a company that does a lot of UK work should be able to combine that with a smaller load, plus of course the same again in the demountable body on the trailer, thereby generating economies of scale that are noticeable in the end cost to the customers.

... just sayin' ;)

Of course if you need to move this summer it's very late already, most of the capacity will be sold already, but it's still worth picking up the phone and asking. I think Finnish companies in all areas of business aren't the absolute best at dealing with web queries - they seem to assume that serious people will always phone.

I will move from UK to Finland with "Muuttopalvelu Uku Tampere". From door to door. They have Facebook and you can ask in any time your questions.

I'm doing the UK to Finland move in the next few weeks and starting to look for companies to do the removal. How did you get on with that company? Everything ok?
