Import car from Italy

Post by guess85 » Thu Oct 26, 2017 3:13 pm

Hi everybody,
in December I will move to Finland and I would like to bring my car.
It is quite new (Sep.2016), it's a Volkswagen Golf VII 1.4 TSI (petrol) 125 CV, 120 g/Km of emissions.
I know that I will have to pay taxes on it but does anybody knows how expensive is it? I've also read that I need an engine heater and an anti-rust treatment, are they expensive?
Is it worth to bring it there or I should buy an used car in Finland?

Thanks.

You don't pay any import tax if you take it as removable goods, check customs website for conditions. Block heater and others you mention is not a must to have is just nice to have. Engine heater will cost like 250-600€ depends the car and place where you put it. Rust treatment I never hear some to do it in there days.

You will also need winter tires and a separate set of wheels.

My personal opinion is that is worth taking it here if you get it as removable good.

Hi, thank you for the reply. I have always read that if I want to register the car here (then delete from Italian car register) I need to pay taxes on it. The place I have rented has an underground parking slot then I don't have to leave the car outside.

There different taxes here:

* import tax for the car will not be charged if you take the care as moving goods. There are some limitations to that: e.g. you need to own the car for 6 months before you move? you cannot sell the car for 2 years unless you pay the tax. and only you and your family can use it. More details here: https://www.vero.fi/en/individuals/tax- ... val-goods/
* yearly tax for using the car you will pay. For that car is max 200€ / year.

There are many cars in Finland without any engine heating, if you have indoor parking is even better.

edit. my bad. You did end up at this page by yourself. As you can read, the tax reduction has been abolished.

Ohh yeah :) then there will be the import tax also, as your car is registered after after Dec 2014.

An individual moving to Finland by 31 December 2017 is eligible for the tax reduction if the motor vehicle taxed as a vehicle imported to Finland as removal goods is registered for the use of the individual in question or a binding agreement on the purchase of the vehicle has been made by 31 December 2014.

For this car, the import tax will be about 4400 €

you can search for yourself, check this link, and choose the xls file for the whole year ( "vuosi 2017 (xls)" ) and search in here the model and date that comes most close. It will give you a pretty good idea of what to expect to pay for car tax (not road tax, that is annual).

https://www.vero.fi/henkiloasiakkaat/au ... tuista_ve/

For example I found in august and september imported:
Merkki Malli Mallin tarkennin Kunto A=Alennettu Päätöspäivä Käyttöönottopvä Ajokm/1000 Verotusarvo Autovero
Märke Modell Modellspecificering Skick A=Sänkt Datum för beslutet Dag för ibruktagandet Körkm/1000 Beskattnings-värde Bilskatt

VOLKSWAGEN GOLF 1.4 5D STW AUT 92KW 20170809 20170106 7 24.853,45 4.473,62
VOLKSWAGEN GOLF 1.4 5D STW AUT 81KW 20170907 20150908 53 20.720,00 4.123,28

The first one come closest regarding the power and age, but it has very low milage. (±7000)
Second one is one year older and less power. so you will find yourself probably somewhere in between.

Auto vero means the payable
car (import) tax.
Besides this, you will need to pay the annual road tax based on the emissions. (184,32€ for 120g/km)
(source: http://www.finlex.fi/fi/laki/ajantasa/2 ... voverolaki scroll through to §69 -> VEROTAULUKKO 1 )
If god would give us the source code, we could change the world

Thank you for the advice. Well, 4500 is quite bad. On top of that I also have to pay the motor heater and the anti rust treatment. I think that maybe is better if I sell the car here and buy and used one there....

Hello...

I got a question regarding this mysterious car import tax. I'm about to move to Finland and I own a car in Germany... its a 10 year old VW Caddy TDI and I own it since Nov 2016. I'm very happy with this car and I wanna take it with me, but then heard about this mysterious import tax. I tried to find infos about this and I read the Verho and some other websites, this still didn't answer my questions.

Some of the infos say I don't have to pay tax when the car is a moving good, others say I have to pay anyway. Then again, Finland is part of the European Union and isn't there a rule that I can bring goods for private use from one country to another without paying tax for it ? Also isn't double taxation not allowed in the EU ?

I know that I have to pay tax (VAT) in the country where I wanna register the car when I import a new car to another EU country, but in this case you don't pay taxes in the country where you pay it. But this rule only valid for new cars and cars up to a certain age or about of kilometer.

It don't get all this and I tried to talk with the people from Verho and this woman was not helpful at all.

Thank you for your help !

You will have to search a similar car imported already: https://www.vero.fi/henkiloasiakkaat/au ... nkilöautot - taulukoita sovelletuista verotusarvoista_

e.g. from 2017, 193.000km -> tax is 1371€

VOLKSWAGEN CADDY 1.6 5D TA 75KW 20160201 20070123 193 5 764,00 1 371,83

Also you can search how much a similar car will cost in Finland and calculate 25-30% of that as a tax.

You said is a TDI, if you plan to drive a lot in Finland is good but if not, mind the yearly diesel tax, which could be around 4-500€.

Hi All,
I have the same question as Piet.

I will move to Finland on February 2017 and I would like to bring my Italian car with me as moving good, to be used only for personal purpose.

The car is a Ford Tourneo Custom Euro 6 (2.0 180hp), I checked on the tables on vero.fi but I didn't find any information on my car to calculate the import tax.
It is a minivan (9 seats) weighting 2300kg. Is it true that cars weighting more than 1850kgs do not have to pay this tax?

FInally, I converted it to a mini-camper removing back seats and installing a kitchen and a bed. Is it legal to drive it in Finland or such kind of modification will create some issues?

There are not too many Ford custom in Finland, you can approximate the tax if you search the market value here https://www.nettiauto.com and then calculate about 25-30% of that as import tax.
After registration, yearly car tax for that, I believe is diesel is quite high: e.g. 863€ year: https://www.nettiauto.com/ford/tourneo-custom/8986712

Thank you all. It seems that is going to be too expensive. A new car like mine cost around 60K euro in Finland (I paid 28K in Italy). Even considering a depreciation up to 45K (the car has only one year and less then 10K km) 30% would be around 13K.
