Route to citizenship: EU or non-EU residence

Post by chaDirector » Sun Feb 25, 2018 8:43 am

Hi all,

I've really gotten a lot out of reading all your posts and comments so thank you for this forum!

I have a question I'm hoping some of you might be able to answer. I currently hold Canadian and French passports. I entered Finland a year ago on a two-year Continuous Residence A Permit on my Canadian passport after receiving a job offer in Finland. During that time, I also became a French citizen (I had applied for French citizenship several years prior and was waiting to hear the decision when I moved to Finland). I am considering staying permanently in Finland, and am about to accept a "permanent" job offer at a Finnish university.

My question is: given that I am planning on applying for Finnish citizenship after four years of residency here, should I continue to reside in Finland on my A Residence permit or should I register with the maistraatti as an EU citizen resident? Assuming I can pass the language exam and demonstrate adequate ties to Finland, will I still be eligible to apply for Finnish citizenship after four years, regardless of the mode in which I am resident (eg EU or non-EU)?

Thanks!

Four years might be a tad too quick. See the requirements: http://migri.fi/en/period-of-residence
http://google.com http://translate.google.com http://urbandictionary.com
Visa is for visiting, Residence Permit for residing.

Hey, thanks for your response. Sorry - I should have clarified: I speak Finnish and Swedish, so should be a je to pass the requisite language exam. This should make it four years, not five, correct?

Eg
“If you have the language skills required for becoming a Finnish citizen, it is sufficient if your permanent residence and domicile has been in Finland
for the past four years without interruption;”
