need expat opinion on move to Jyväskylä

Post by tamal31 » Tue Feb 27, 2018 6:39 pm

Hello people I am new here. I am from Kolkata, India. Recently completed my PhD from Jadavpur University India in the field of Industrial and Production Engineering. I have recently got a postdoc offer from University of Jyväskylä, Finland. The gross salary is roughly 40k Eur / year. Health care, pension, travel or accidental benefits are covered.

Can any one tell me how good this job offer is?
how good is the University of Jyväskylä?
what would be my net monthly salary?
Is it enough for an Indian to live a good life and save some?
How is the living cost in Jyväskylä to live a moderate life? (say i need a 1 bedroom apartment close to University, i would mostly cook my food at home, i am not too much outgoing)
My PI over there wants me to join the job ASAP. How long it generally takes to process the residence permit application for researchers?
if i opt to bring my wife later after I joined the job, how much difficult the process would be to obtain a residence permit for her?

any help would be appreciated.

It's good. It's not great, but it's good. For PhD in a university, it's pretty much what you'd expect.

It's a decent university. Not at the level of Harvard or MIT, but it's still decent.

So many factors to calculate this, but roughly 2375 euros.

It depends on your lifestyle, but I'd say yes.

Rent would be somewhere between 600-900. You can find cheaper, and you can find more expensive. Depends.
Food, from my experience with Indian colleagues, you can probably get by with 100-200 euros/month. Again, depends on your lifestyle.

Explain your application when you need to start. They usually accommodate those needs and prioritise researchers/students.

Nothing is difficult. There are the rules. If you follow them, you get the residence permit. If you don't, you don't get the residence permit.
In your case, it's family relations residence permit. Income requirements are ~ 1700-1800 euros. You satisfy those. If all other rules are followed, things are good.

Familiarise yourself with these two sites: http://migri.fi/en/home and https://www.infopankki.fi/en/frontpage so you don't need to ask many questions in the future.
Every case is unique. You can't measure the result of your application based on arbitrary anecdotes online.

Migri seems to be work in progress after their new website. A lot of information that used to be there is missing right now.
http://google.com http://translate.google.com http://urbandictionary.com
Visa is for visiting, Residence Permit for residing.
