Work for US Employer from Finland

Post by waikikiguy » Mon Aug 27, 2018 12:00 am

Aloha,

I've been married to a Finn since 2015 and have two daughters (marriage and births already on file in Finland). We'd like them to be schooled in Finland and my firm is fine with me working from anywhere on the planet. This seems doable through some sort of contracting relationship but I wonder about any intricacies people may have heard of as I work in the financial services industry; two of us manage a rather large portfolio for our US based clients. I'm pretty much a back of the house guy - but I wonder if Finland would require me to get some local licenses? Should i be a sole prop. in Finland that contracts to my old firm, should there be an intermediary (shell) in between? Am i totally over baking this? Any color would be helpful, i just worry about the US and all things financial.. sigh. Thanks! Kiitos!

Simple facts:
- US citizen
- Married to Finnish resident
- 2 daughters
- employed in US
- goal is to become Finnish permanent citizen and continue working for US firm

Mahalo!

Easily done, you can keep working from Finland for a US employer, the main challenge would be when you would like financing for a home and or other scenarios as most banks would not consider the US income. Thus, the other scenario you presented which is setting up a local limited liability company and the US company paying your salary into that company as income, then withdrawing a salary would work. Welcome to Finland, I am enjoying it!
