car insurance

Post by stammler » Thu Jul 21, 2005 5:06 pm

Dear all
I would like to do a fare comparison for my car to be insured in Finland.
I searched for price comparisons in the internet and found http://www.vertaa.fi/, but they don't have an english version of their website, and I don't speak Finnish.

I would like to know the following:
Which is the cheapest insurance for my car. Renault Espace 1988 2.0 TXE, owned by myself during the last 3 years?

The car is currently not insured, and I need to get insurance to drive it to Finland and import it as a removal good. ( I read the tax regulation on this already ). Does anybody know how to get insurance for this, or do I have to get insurance abroad first and then in Finland? The car still has German registration plates, but it will come as part of my removal from the UK.

Any expertise on this is highly appreciated.
Thanks very much

Florian

Hank would know but he's on holiday......

We brought our car into Finland on Swiss plates/insurance in 2001 and then got Finnish insurance (Tapiola is the name of the company) after we had registered the car here. The car had been bought in Finland originally as a tax free car for export (that was 15 years ago!) but I'm not sure that changes anything.

As far as I know all the insurance companies offer pretty much the same rates - I don't think there would be a big difference - but you should still call a couple and see what they say. Pohjola is another big insurance company.

My guess is that they will not insure a car with foreign plates.... but I could be wrong.

Sorry... hopefully somebody else will be able to give you more info.

PS I tried sticking Renault Espace 2.0 into the calculator at vertaa.fi but it only goes back to 1990 and when I tried to "cheat" it gave me an error message that the model etc didn't exist. But I know nothing about cars so I am not the best person to figure it out (and my Finnish ain't brilliant  ) It could be that there are no 1988 Espace's in Finland so they have no records in their database. In which case you should call them.

The compulsory insurance you'll need is "liikennevakuutus". In case you cause an accident, the liikennevakuutus will compensate for damages to other vehicles (not yours) and for all personal injuries (unless you've been drinking etc., in which case they'll eventually collect the money from you).

I used the calculators on the web pages of some companies and got the following results. These are the yearly rates for liikennevakuutus in Helsinki (as the area affects the price), with 0% bonus. (The bonus is incremented yearly if you cause no accidents.)

Fennia (http://www.fennia.fi): 701.97e
Pohjola (http://www.pohjola.fi): 711.70e
If (http://www.if.fi): 686.52e
Pohjantähti (http://www.pohjantahti.fi): 692e

Note that there may be other factors affecting the price which you will only find out about when you ask for a quotation.

Optional insurances ("vapaaehtoinen ajoneuvovakuutus") are also sold to cover the damages to your own vehicle even if you are the culprit, but these may not be available to older cars (15 years or so), and involve paying a deductible. There are insurances against theft, vandalism, collisions with elk/moose or reindeer, fire, etc. but you'll have to ask the company of your choice for a quotation.

Oh, you're in Rovaniemi - that'll result in the following prices:

Fennia: 605.86e
Pohjola: 646.40e
If: 606.85e
Pohjantähti: 587e

(The Tapiola calculator would only go back to year 1990.)

Ask your current or former insurance company to send some prof of your earlier years for the bonuses. Helped me to lower the fee alot.

Another good insurance company, worth checking out and often the cheapest (no, no. I don't work for them myself. :D But I've just noticed that their rates are often the cheapest) is Lähivakuutus / The Local Insurance Group:
