In order to understand the terms in the Finnish web sites for house renting,
I provide some links below which have online Finnish/English dictionaries.
That could be useful for people not speaking Finnish when trying to "decode" Finnish web sites. I have used them myself sometimes.

http://www.fincd.com/index.php?txtSearch=selaa&lang=fi
http://www.freedict.com/onldict/fin.html
http://dictionaries.travlang.com/Englis ... puu&max=50

Also the well known http://translate.google.com/translate_t ... =fi&tl=en# might be of some help for translating whole sentences or web sites.

I would appreciate if anyone could add some more on-line Finish/English (and English/Finish) dictionaries, especially if they include a voice-generator, so I can learn how the words are pronounced
I find the letters combinations very difficult in Finnish words
:ohno:
I will be moving to Finland soon and want to begin learning the language - starting from the keywords at least.

Thank you.

Hi,

Just a comment about oikotie. Oikotie.fi in my opinion doesn't efficiently assist anyone in finding a place to rent. I tried them once and all they do is send u the address of flats to go view where other competing applicants are also coming, and then after filling out a form, the person showing the house chooses someone some days after. U therefore end up going round-and-round the whole city viewing and waiting to see if they pick u for a flat. It is so time consuming and aggravating, why can't oikotie.fi just rent the flat after giving ur personal information to the first person that calls who qualifies as a responsible tenant? Sometimes if u even get a few minutes late to view the flat, the person showing it is gone. Plus this site doesn't even give information in english. Dunno, but their way of renting flats is impossible, and who needs to view the flat anyway when its already shown room by roomy on the website? Efficiency would be just to rent the flat to the first responsible person that calls, and since they don't do this, they have flats going unrented for months. So apparently Finnish people who use oikotie.fi to rent out their flats (and pay them for getting them rented), don't know that finlandforum.org exists to get their flats rented in a matter of days at no cost. Right now I'm waiting to rent a flat through finlandforum.org and can't get one while there're tons of flats with nobody renting them on oikotie.fi (and I don't want to use them again since I may waste my time viewing places and not get chosen for a flat). Just shows how lack of information can upset peoples needs. If u all out there read this, post ur room or flat ad on finlandforum.org and u'll save money and get ur flat rented in no time.

Oikotie exists to maximize the value to it's shareholders. Paying costumers are the landlords and thus they want to provide them with a broad selection of tenants, so that they can maximize their investment. It's not a race to give the place to the first one or a match making service. They just display ads.
To hell with the world, I can make my own people. I'll eat whatever I want. I'll wear whatever I want, and I'll create whoever I want.

Perhaps that's not what landlords want?

WIth a system like that, it limits your choice of tennant - the result would be that the security deposit would be way higher. I'd want at least 4 months rent from a tennant I didn't interview/choose...

It used to be that estate agents would charge the tennant 1 months rent for finding them somewhere to stay (dunno if this still happens). Is that better or worse than Oikotie?

and as for just advertising on Finland Forum, well the audience is a bit small isn't it? (I can rent you my place if you like, 2000 Euros/month, 4 months deposit)

Hi Mook,

Thanks for ur comment, and I appreciate u offering to rent me ur flat. Unfortunately I'm only a university student and can't afford 2000€ a month. But if u know of someone renting a flat in Helsinki for maximum 560€, then I will take it (my # 044 958 9786). I have to move from where I am by July 1st. And hopefully I'll get some more positive responses from other people about my post here that can rent me a flat.

I think its worse to have to pay one months rent to get a flat, so oikotie.fi is better in this regard.

Hello guys!
It's amazing what you have done, great guide.

But wouldn't it be more convenient to simply use Google translation pages?
Just wondering =)

Hello,
I am exchange student coming to study in the University of Helsinki. So I am looking for small apartment to rent in Helsinki. And I meet with some problems. I already found a few good offers and I was ready to signed an lease agreement and pay the deposit. But I became worried when the landlord ask me to make a payment to his lawyer via western union. I was not ready to make an agreement with one person and to make the payment to another. It sounds risk to me. I am asking for advise. Is it sounds normally for you?
