Finnish Olympic Gear!

Post by aeskola » Sat Feb 11, 2006 9:28 pm

Hey, I am an American of Finnish decent and I want to support my Nordic brethren! Does anyone know where I can get offical Finnish Olympic Gear? I saw the Finnish moguls team compete at an event in Lake Placid. They had these awesome hats that were white with the blue cross running up them so they resembled the Finnish flag. Does anyone know where I can specifically get one of those? Anything else would be cool too. Please let me know.

Kippis!

Öööh... well, the "classic" as you can get is a "Suomi-verkkarit" - more or less the 1952 olympics tracksuit.

Or then a hockey shirt.

If you like to look like a genuine Finnish hick, you absolutely need to wear this cap with the hockey shirt

(darn, I've lost mine  )
You look at any hockey game and you can spot the "uniform"

2006 Olympic Team clothing ?

Post by mrshourula » Mon Feb 13, 2006 7:11 am

I think what the OP was asking about -- and me, also, is where, if possible, to buy the CURRENT Finnish Olympic Team clothing. ROOTS, which makes the clothes for USA and other coutries, has an extensive web site that sells the clothes. I was able to discover that they have a contract with Trexet. But there is nothing for sale on the Trexet web site.

Is it just not a Finnish thing to to wear the national identity on your clothes?

Of course it is, you do it for the hockey match. Or something like that. You get hockey shirts, caps and stuff like that always from the vendors.

Wearing something like a SUOMI-t-shirt daily though is a bit 'amis'... what'd you call it in the USA - a "trailer trash" thing to do.

They probably are peddling something related in the markets, "official" gear & so forth right now. In the net... doubtful. That memoriesoffinland place would be the one to procure them if they are available, so my recommendation is to ask them. (Finnish "factories" very seldom sell directly to consumers. I can get a direct delivery of concrete from the factory, but I stll have to go buy it at the hardware store...)

As a sidenote - I don't even know what the Finnish Olympic Team's "official" gear looks like.

Well, as my 17 year old daughter explains, of course if we over here were all running around in USA Olympic-logo clothing we'd look silly -- as this link proves

http://www.roots.com/new_usa/html/06_grammys.shtml

But in the case of Finnish Olympic-logo clothing being worn here in the San Francisco Bay Area, it would be "international" so rather than trashy, it would be "tres chic."

True, I mean the kids here go in Jamaica, South Africa and Brazil -tracksuits. You can go to the local cheapo-mart and get that stuff for a few bucks - all "genuine" yeah... Even an USA one wouldn't be "that bad" (and you see a lot of that). But yeah, they're a bit not so on the mark with the merchandizing. I'll hoot if something pokes me in the eye.

But really, if one wants to look "Finnish" that hockey-shirt+karjala cap is as native as one can get ;)

Well, I would not use any Karjala -cap.

I suppose it's strange that I have to dig out info about who and where (and if) sells those Finnish team Torino outfits, and still don't find a direct answer.

There are several manufactures ( http://www.torinokisasivut.fi/taustasiv ... ?num=12063 ), but the main one is Tretex Finland Oy http://www.newwave.fi . Still, I dont find any info about those outfits on their pages, not even a phone number, or address

I was wearing one of those walking with my SO down a crowded Grafton St in Dublin a couple of years ago... a passing voice said "Hyvä Suomi" I didn't see which face. My SO was quite happy... strangely so was I :D

My cousin and I (both speakers of colloquial Finnish) love freaking out our Finnish brothers and sisters by a strong (and a bit theatrical)Terve on the London Underground. Jeez, the Finns freak out when a couple of Londoners speak Finnish with an English accent. But then I am always treated to a big smile. Then they ask if I work for Nokia!
