Ah well I like football too, but I try not to speak too loudly about that seeing as my team were relegated last season, and lost their manager and best striker... ehem...

Well, you know I'm not actually THAT interested in what the drivers or team managers have to say after the race or before it for that matter. A bit, yes of course. I want to know why there was a period in the race when the driver was off the pace. Sometimes we get a decent answer, sometimes we don't. I like to follow reports from good motorsport journalists, as they will very often get the real reasons from the drivers / team bosses, but will hide the nugget of gold in a boulder of coal so that the teams' press officers don't get wind of it. What I would like is to hear from the race engineers, so rather than listening to the driver or team boss say "we don't know yet, we have to analyse the data", we can hear a detailed explanation from the right person. But then, the engineers in question don't have lessons in how to speak or not to speak to the media, so are not allowed to appear in front of camera...

As for JPM, can't wait! Two good drivers at McLaren. Finally. I agree, his approach is not that of a McLaren-man and it's going to be extremely interesting to see whether Juan Pablo adapts his attitude or whether McLaren (and its partners) finally realises that it wouldn't hurt to show a bit of honest character from time to time.

A teacher? Heaven forbid! A motorsport journo? Yes and no, but it's in the past now so not worth going into boring detail.

Jenks of Motor Sport fame was my all time favourite, but sadly he's no longer with us. Of the current crowd, the obvious ones are Nigel Roebuck and Eoin Young. Heikki Kulta gets some great stories too (and nine times out of ten he gets them before anybody else), plus visiting the TS F1 pages is a good way to improve your Finnish.

There's another journalist who I believe is freelance but writes mainly for The Times (UK) called Simon Barnes. He doesn't specialise in F1 but some of his F1 pieces have been the best I have ever read.

Always read the F1 features in The Economist or Euro Business (or subscribe to F1 Business). Makes a change from the run-of-the-mill pap.

Thanks, I agree Simon Barnes writes very good articles and Autosport is always a good read. I will check out Turun Sanomat(assume TS refers to this) I have noticed before they seem to break all the stories concerning Finnish drivers. I used to be a member of Team McLaren and got their racing line magazine every month, that was pretty good for behind the scenes info albeit mainly Ronspeak!

I'm really pleased that you have heard of Simon Barnes - so few people have.
Yeap, TS is Turun Sanomat: http://www.turunsanomat.fi/f1
I'm another ex-Team McLaren member. There seems to be quite a few of us about, I wonder if Team McLaren has any current members!

!
Do you know Simon Barnes?

I have feeling that I knew his father, who was a big influence in my interest in Motor Sport .. John Barnes.

John was a team rally driver for Peugeot in the 1970s.
His best result was 4th in the RAC rally of UK. He was also a very good Hill climber in a 500cc Cooper and an evil super-charged Elva. My brother was his mechanic/oily rag.
I am sure that John then had a very young son (7 or 8 Yrs old) named Simon, who was always getting under everyone feet .in the pits  "just trying to help dad!"...
John died realtively young,.40ish. but they named a street after John in his home village of Selsey in West Sussex. Barnes Close.

It's quite possible. I've only ever exchanged a few e-mails with Simon Barnes but he did once mention that he had a special passion for motorsport because of his father.

I hope John Barnes inspired you to do great things! Are there any hill climb events in Finland? Are there any hills...?
