Subsitute farce spoils Fulhams return to Craven Cottage

Post by PeterF » Mon Jul 12, 2004 1:05 pm

Fulham return to Craven Cottage which has been rebuilt with
7.5M£ from Mohamed Al Fayed.
But the game to celebrate a return home for the fans ended in a farce.
The Ref walked out rather than contravene new Fifa rules, which limits the number of replacements.

But the match continued as an exhibition with a linesman refereeing.

It ended 0-0 but.... By the end of the match, the two coaches had made 27 substitutions.

One thing about this made me laugh:
Fulham secretary Lee Hoos slammed the Fifa regulations, which were introduced following complaints about the large number of substitutions used in internationals.

"I think the rule is absolutely ludicrous," he said.

"It is imposing a significant health and safety risk on players who have been back in training for one week to have to play 90 minutes."

Watford manager Ray Lewington agreed, saying: "There has to be common sense really. To ask players to play 90 minutes so early is ridiculous."
What a load of bollocks, If a sunday league player can play 90 minutes after a night on the syrup and a Ruby Murray a bloody professional footballer has no excuse.

Health and safety risk :?:

What about the fans who payed money to watch the game? I bet they enjoyed the 0-0 game with 27 substitutions ;-)
