Kayaking around Helsinki

Post by abishopp » Mon Jul 19, 2004 12:36 pm

I have just moved to Finland and would like get into kayaking. Last Saturday a friend and I hired kayaks in Espoo and explored the area a little bit. This has inspired me to try to become involved.

I don't really know what I am doing and so some type of course or instruction would probably be best. Does anybody know if anything like this is availiable in English. Also does anyone know anything about clubs, and which places are cheapest to hire kayaks from.

Also, it would be really great to hear from people involved in kayaking with inspirational stories and ideas on places to visit.

Cheers Tony

Tony,

I found this webpage a while back http://www.bearwater.fi/engindex.htm and been meaning to check it out.

If you click on "paddling schools" you will get some info in Finglish about the courses available

also some extra info on the Espoo webpages http://www.espootravel.com/xsl_taso2.as ... 8543;16505

Helsingin kanootti Kluubi does not have courses in english, however they take memberships for 120 euros (100 if you have done their course) year. See this page, it's in finnish but you'll be able to understand the basic numbers. Next time you'll be able to enroll is next tuesday 17:30-18:30, the place is the small island near Rajasaari - nearby Sibelius monument. I don't know if you'll need to speak and understand finnish to be a member, yesterday the guy taking new members started by saying a few words to me in English.

They also rent see their price list => Tunti/ tuntia = hour/ hours

Did you have any luck finding a course in English, Tony?

My wife and I have just decided to give this a bash.

I havn't oraganised anything. Although the website at Bear and Water says that they are running courses. They have been canceled due to lack of interest and will not be running until next year. I also contacted the Helsinki Club and they do not have any places on a beginers course until next year. They did say that language would be no problem as they have many instructors who speak fluent English. I've met a few people who go kayaking and my plan is to go out with them and learn that way, and maybe take a course next year if I think it will be worthwhile.

Will look at Helsinki canoe Safaris today,

Tony

Yep, we were told the same thing by Bear and Water. Maybe I'll see you on their course next year.

If I remember rightly, we paid €12 each for two hours (from Bear & Water).

Was checking out the older posts when I came across your notice about kayaking. I am an inveterate kayak bum (when I'm not too busy being a ski bum) and as soon as the ice melts, get in touch and we'll go paddling together.
