Re: receiving laptop in Finland
thanks. Is it same for students?
I have found one link where it is mentioned that some goods are exempt from VAT altogether, for example laptops and other electronic products.

Yes. The VAT system does not have a concept of student discounts. Also, the tax is calculated from the invoiced price of the product, including the shipping and handling fees (if any.)sandykateen345 wrote:thanks. Is it [the] same [VAT] for students?
Nope. They have 0% import tariff but they’re not exempt from VAT. (Import tax and VAT and are two different things. For some items, you have to pay both.) You can get the import tariff percentages for various product categories from EU’s TARIC database.sandykateen345 wrote:I have found one link where it is mentioned that some goods are exempt from VAT altogether, for example laptops and other electronic products.

Also remember that unless you have the receipt (sometimes even if) Tulli will use their "value" of the computer.

But if it is a present sent from a family member and not a direct buy to a foreign company, do VAT rules still apply?
Re: receiving laptop in Finland
Check the customs pages. Iirc the limit for present was 40€...Redshift wrote:But if it is a present sent from a family member and not a direct buy to a foreign company, do VAT rules still apply?

.... So next they send you a Lambourgini as a "gift" and the taxes don't applyBut if it is a present sent from a family member and not a direct buy to a foreign company, do VAT rules still apply?
If there is no receipt of the value in with the shipment, they go find an equivalent from a Finnishh shop and charge the VAT on that value.
Say NO to gifts! They are expensive!

And VAT on the postage as well. And you have to go to the customs office in Vantaa to pick it up so there's that cost as well.Pursuivant wrote: If there is no receipt of the value in with the shipment, they go find an equivalent from a Finnishh shop and charge the VAT on that value.

You can do customs declarations online these days so I don't see any need to go Vantaa.Jazqas wrote:And VAT on the postage as well. Re: receiving laptop in Finland
Sorry to revive an old thread. My son just arrived in Finland to study for 5 months. He forgot his laptop. Can I send it to him without worrying about him paying taxes to receive it? It is obviously not a new item. Are there any hints for shipping you could suggest?
Thanks
Thanks

Is now a good time to teach him the consequences of his (in)actions?
Just send it. If he has to pay, it'll have to come out of his "entertainment" expenses.

The biggest problem is if the laptop has a lithium battery. Then it might not be able to be shipped by air. As far as customs goes, your son just has to call and tell them it is personal property and they will release it.

Note for future: that might work now, but not few years after you move here.heretostay wrote: ↑Fri Aug 17, 2018 11:22 pmThe biggest problem is if the laptop has a lithium battery.
