And when is the Easter bonfire?enk wrote:Came across this (http://www.kolumbus.fi/seurasaarisaatio ... spuvut.htm)
when trying to find out what time the Easter bonfire's going to be. Apparently they rent the following dresses
for girls:
Häme, Jurva, Keski-Karjala, Kirkkonummi, Kokkola, Kymenlaakso and Munsala.
Doesn't have anything about the size of the dresses, but the rental fee for adults is pretty darn cheap!

The whole thing is an Ostrobothnian anathema - kokko only belongs to Juhannuskaren wrote:And when is the Easter bonfire?enk wrote:Came across this (http://www.kolumbus.fi/seurasaarisaatio ... spuvut.htm)

(an authentic Easter bonfire from Kälviä)
...but in Helsinki, there's an Easter bonfire e.g. in Seurasaari on Sat the 22nd... starting at 18.30...
http://www.kolumbus.fi/seurasaarisaatio ... iainen.htm
NB: it says on the pages that they'll first burn a "narrikokko" ("jester bonfire") and later on, when it gets darker, a proper one...
Re: Still Looking For Traditional Finnish Clothing....
I guess that would explain why the only one I ever went to was in Kokkola.
Re: Still Looking For Traditional Finnish Clothing....
Yes, I think the Easter bonfire is very much an Ostrobothnian thing... in fact even the Seurasaari bonfire seems to be organised by a Middle-Ostrobothnian society... well I never knew of such a thing, in my youth in Savokaren wrote:I guess that would explain why the only one I ever went to was in Kokkola.
Re: Still Looking For Traditional Finnish Clothing....

Re: Still Looking For Traditional Finnish Clothing....
Oh yeah, trust the rest of Finland to pick the shortest night of the year for the bonfire (with "metsäpalovaroitus" most years preventing it anyway)... The bonfire is for Easter Saturday evening and night when the forces of evil are roaming freely: only God fearing Ostrobothnians are between the witches and your prescious lifestock! The children come for candy also on Saturday, originally for blackmailing purposes, of course. I think I saw my first midsummer bonfire when I was 15 or 16, a bit of an anticlimax really, you barely saw it in the bright sunlight...sammy wrote:The whole thing is an Ostrobothnian anathema - kokko only belongs to Juhannus

Re: Still Looking For Traditional Finnish Clothing....
There is a documentary about (in English) that looks at Finnish Traditional Clothing, what it means etc. I watched it at college. I believe you find a link on the jouseno site or joutseno yliopisto (???) Very informative, as South Karalia is leading traditional clothing and musical area. The link also shows the "Traditional" museum link

I do not need to know you will attend my Funeral. I would rather you call just to say Hi !!

University of Joutseno... Hmm Would it be this one - National Costume Centre - http://www.craftmuseum.fi/eng/ - in Jyväskylä? They have a "net exhibition" in English on their pages... http://www.craftmuseum.fi/eng/netexhibitions.htm...SaxonManFinland wrote:There is a documentary about (in English) that looks at Finnish Traditional Clothing, what it means etc. I watched it at college. This can also be a good source of info: http://www.kansallispuvut.fi/ - it's only in F I'm afraid...
Here's the women's dress from where my family originally comes from (no longer part of Finland, that particular area)... couldn't find a pic of a men's costume... perhaps men from Kivennapa wore tuulipuku already in those times... well the place IS called Pervomaiskoje in Russian

Moikka,
I have a whole page of addresses for you, it's from a magazine issued by the Northern-Karelian handicraft centres, the Taito Shops. It has addresses and website-infos from all over Finland, not just for traditional Karelian pukua.
It's a 750MB scan, if you tell me where to send it (there's no attachment possible with this reply), I am sure you'll find somthing there
Just to let you know I'll send no spam, here's my email: SilkeAnne08(at)web.de
All the best, terkuin,
Silke

Re: Still Looking For Traditional Finnish Clothing....
Hello, I've just posted a traditional costume in the For Sale part of the Forum. It is Vuorelma- exactly this one: http://www.en.vuorelma.palvelee.fi/prod ... l?id=25/23
It is hand-dyed, hand-woven and hand-sewn in a traditional pattern and fabric. I can't quite figure out how to upload a photo, my email is [email protected], if you send me an email, I can send you several photos. I'm asking 500 euros, or close to it, it usually sells for 2200 on the Vuorelma site, or you could buy the fabric alone for 1400 euro. They are expensive but everything is handmade and it's a very rare find. Send an email if you're interested.
Cheers,
Brooke
