The Tampere Floral Festival

The Tampere Floral Festival attracts thousands of local residents and visitors to enjoy a fragrant symphony of marvellous colours. Over 150 separate events are arranged during the ten-day festival. Since 1984,
the event annually has brought tens of thousands of visitors into the Tampere City Centre, which is decked out with many thousands of floral arrangements and collections.

The Tampere Floral Festival offers something for everyone. That's why it remains a very popular family event. Children are able to play traditional outdoor games in early 20th Century style in the historic Amuri workers' quarter. Also, the city offers active and informative tours in a historic environment for both young and old alike. All aspects of the arts world are firmly on display during the Tampere Floral Festival. Music fans can enjoy the top names in Finnish music in the Programme Tent located in the Central Square. A Floral Rock Event winds up the festival with a broad cross-section of top names from Finnish pop and rock music. Taste buds are satisfied in the Wine Village, and by a wide variety of traditional and exotic culinary delights served on the opening day of the festival. Wines from all corners of the globe complement the enjoyment. The festival's own sweet floral tartlet makes an ideal dessert.

Many other events are staged during the Tampere Floral Festival. The Tampere Flamenco Music festival is a traditional part of the city's annual floral event. The International Salsa Festival, at the conclusion of the floral festival, provides an opportunity to move one's hips in tune with vibrant latin rhythms. In addition, Floral
Trotting Races and the Koskikeskus Flower Star contest are all part of the floral festival tradition. Visitors to the start of the 2005 Floral Festival will also get an opportunity to view a range of preserved museum vehicles. Various community singing events are also arranged. The fan-like structure of the Floral Festival easily allows co-operation between the different events. Something new and fascinating is on offer every year; no wonder visitors return time and time again to Tampere.¨

Each year a lucky girl is named the Floral Princess and a prominent citizen receives the title of Floral Mayor. Both are in attendance at many events during the festival. Senior citizens, too, also receive special floral awards. It's no surprise, therefore, that the annual Floral Festival is an essential part of Tampere's summer calendar. Come and enjoy it in the city centre!

The 22nd Tampere Floral Festival is arranged between 22nd July – 31st July, 2005. The opening takes place in the city's Central Square on Friday, July 22nd from 3 p.m to 7 p.m. The programme includes an opening parade, Finland's largest culinary table, a floral chaity auction as well as music and events for all ages. Events in the Programme Tent and Wine Village go on into the early hours!
