Hi,
I have heard that in Finland, one can get free lawyer if per month income is less than 1000 euros, please advise if it is correct and under what conditions person get lawyer? Is it like if one is under the complain of violence or stealing would get free lawyer? Or, can one get free lawyer to sue any other person?
Kiitos!

Legal Aid is based on income. You go to the Legal Aid office in the city or town where you live, fill out the form (bring a copy of your wage information or KELA benefits), and make an appointment to see the lawyer. In a few weeks, you will receive a letter saying how much you pay per visit. My husband brings home about 2000 euros a month and our co-pay for the lawyer is 40 euros for every hour he spends on the case. Most Legal Aid attorneys will not overcharge you for their time writing letters. They mostly bill you for office visits and if they have to neootiate with someone about your case. For example, I am trying to get the housing company where I live to replace my balcony door because it is broken. The housing company wants me to pay part of the cost, I don't agree - it is the housing company's door so they have to pay for it - I did not break it - the door was defective during installation. So, I went to Legal Aid and the attorney will negotiate with the housing company so I don't have to worry about it.
Not all Legal Aid attorneys are great, so if you don't like the lawyer you were assigned, ask for a different one.

As written above, legal aid depends on the income, you may get it fully or partly depending on your income. There's a "oikeusapu laskuri" somewhere to help you find out how much you'd be expected to pay.
In that case they usually announce on their web pages or information pamphlets the price for recipients of legal aid (same as from the office, same conditions apply.)
This. You should also know that you do not have to take a lawyer from their office. You can ask a private lawyer to represent you.martimasters wrote:Not all Legal Aid attorneys are great, so if you don't like the lawyer you were assigned, ask for a different one.
