I would say its got nothing to do with your age or the way you look...its mostly to do with your skin color(brown) and they wanted to check if you can really afford an expensive liquor and hence asked for your id...I would term it as being ignorant

I WILL FURTHER EXPLAIN TO OTHERS:
I can understand that fact, that there are not many brown people in Finland. Out of which only a small fraction drinks. That added to the fact will buy a decent wine from Alko is close to impossible . I have faced this kind of situations before in other shops. I did not face it next time I visited the same shop rather they were very friendly next time. Basically, it is a dream that almost every Finn has that, every foreigner lives on benefits.
What can I say? I have my utmost sympathies for the IGNORANT ones.
Some one mentioned about knowing the system. Well, it is not about the system. Just that most Finns have not yet met a brown guy who can buy them beer or throw them a launch party just because he felt like celebrating. As a part of my work, I need to understand the culture of all the different nationalities I work with so, it is easier for me to understand. But, frankly I don't expect a local to understand that.
I know it very well this is how it is gonna be and so be it. I don't care about these small things. Time is luxury for me. But, I visit this forum as to have a open conversation which I am ready to have in person but, most of the Finns don't want to have.
As co-worker as work once mentioned, that his expression was "What that is?" when he first saw me. But, one day I helped him fix a big technical problem and then he felt like telling this to me. He now feels "Se on ruskea mies. Se mun esimies.". Lets see after 10 years what he thinks.

and i was thinking the same thing...that most of the finns think that foreigners live on benefits(thats a lot,isn't it) and especially if there is some brown guy buying something expensive,its gotta be a mistake...how on earth its possible...and thats why i used the term ignorance...as most of them do not know anything much beyond EU...especially about Asia...but lets wait and see how Asia is going to transform the world in a decade as this century truly belongs to Asia...

Well, no one should get offended as I believe we are having a conversation with grown up men/women right!!! Moreover, this discussion pertains to reality as one see's it from the perspective of a local and a foreign. I personally, think it is important to have such discussions to develop more understanding between each other. Unfortunately, we cannot have open face to face discussion.

By the way, I have been a customer of Alko last 3.5 years no one ever asked me for a id. Read what I said and answer.

EDIT: The real reason is not racism. Reason is jealousy. I have decided next time if guy doesn't ask for a id I will force him to see it.

I'm about same age as you, have goatee and I was asked for the ID last time at Alko few months ago. Bought one bottle of beer and one bottle of cider. No big deal. Did you pay by cash or with plastic?

Trust me i do know a little bit about it...i don't speak the language that much but i do understand fair bit of it to get away in doing simple things..and i do a lot of socialising...and that too with finns...whom i know..actually they are the only people i know here...and i am also a member of the local football club..
and those things that everybody knows and nobody tells,i am fortunate enough to be aware of them as again my circle revolves around finns...

I am amazed. I live here much longer than you, I speak some of the language (even the local lingo ), almost all my contacts are with Finns, I participate in their events (they even made me chairman of one of their activities) and still I discover new things all the time. Especially this forum is a great source of information about the way Finns think.

thats why i said i know a little bit...you probably know more than me...but as far as participating in activities is concerned,i think i have done a fair share during my stay of nearly 3 years...then i have a knack of learning new things....i have even gone to Confirmation ceremony quite recently which was a first...and it was a good experience which provided me an opportunity to learn something new..
besides i already know how the system works as i have undergone almost every phase that an immigrant can experience in finland...be it getting a residence permit,SSN,Kela card,bank account,employment office,internship,getting a job,tax office,getting married,paternity leave,driving school,buying a car,getting a loan from bank to buy a house,participating in activities,member of local finnish football club,etc...so yes i do know a bit how things work but again you may be knowing better than me...

I see it less as Finland trying to build a threshold to keep out the parasites, and more that Finland is actually competing for "quality immigrants". Unless it tries harder to encourage this group and help them integrate, it's Finland who misses out on getting the "stars" to move here.
