How to find freelance design projects?
How to find freelance design projects?
Hi all,
I want to find some short-term design projects for my stay in Helsinki (i.e. web design, user experience design, interface design). Skillset, education and portfolio are all under control, I would say, the only question is where to find projects (and where to start looking).
Any ideas, please? I would really appreciate it!
Thanks!

No, the only really big question is how good your Finnish is.
Re: How to find freelance design projects?
You're right, sorry, I forgot about that..
My Finnish isn't really there. I am aware it's a challenge, but Google Translate should help?..

Re: How to find freelance design projects?
Well at least you have a sense of humour
There are scores of unemployed Finnish graphic designers/similar with university degrees out there. Their Finnish is perfect (of course) and their English plus one or two more languages are perfect. They know what Finnish customers want and how they think. They have local contacts.
So I have a hard time seeing that it would be worth the effort to hire you for a project. Sorry, but that is how it is at the moment.

Hi
Thanks, I appreciate your answer! I have to underline I never said I was a graphic designer. Although I really appreciate graphic designers, and I know a bit myself (not enough to call it my specialty), I think my skills are more valuable to businesses than those of graphic designers, at least right now. And I never said I wanted to be employed, but that I was looking for freelance projects. I see that as an advantage as well, since no one can afford to employ right now, but maybe some companies still need some work on some projects.
With all due respect, I didn't ask if you thought I could pull it off, but where to start looking
So please, does anyone have any suggestions? I would really appreciate it!
Thanks!

Hi Pursuivant,
Thanks, I'm keeping an eye on those already. Mol is especially helpful
I was wondering, is there any place just for projects? Do they post some in newspapers, for instance? Is there any kind of Finnish CraigsList? Or GetAFreelancer? or oDesk?
Or does it go more through contacts? Or do you have to have your own company? Or should I register myself as a designer on some websites?
Or is it that there isn't too much freelancing going on?
Sebi

PS. Sorry interleukin for my hasty reply. It's really helpful to know the situation out there. I just want to give it a try anywayPursuivant wrote:well, theres always http://www.mol.fi or monster

http://www.liidit.fi/ is a sort of Finnish Craigslist. You need to pay for the contact details, though. The earlier you see the offer, the lower the price and the higher the possibility to get the project.
I also doubt that your undertaking will be of success, as you need to have connections and a good network. Without that, its extremely difficult.

Re: How to find freelance design projects?
I've been looking for someone to redesign the awful banner on my blog:
http://www.nordicfootball.info
I cannot pay anything, but I would give you a 125 x 125 banner in the sidebar, and a short big-up in our forthcoming 'partners' page. This obviously won't make you rich, but we get a decent amount of traffic from Finnish people, including football decision makers and media types, and it would all help to get you well know. Also, we rank reasonably well in google, so it would be a good positive puff piece about you when potential clients search for your name.
I was thinking of a student or somesuch with their own toiminimi, but if you fancy it pm me. It might be a nice simple job and some good publicity among Finnish clients.

I'm not a designer, but for sure I could try to make something cool for your logo (if stauciuc doesn't have anything against)
My web http://corbacho.info and last project I made in Drupal http://ayudavoip.com
By the way, if you like soccer, check this TV advertisement
http://www.corbacho.info/finlandia/2009 ... nnish-men/
I found it really funny... Exactly the same happens in Spain. For most of Spanish men also soccer is very important!

Maybe that would be better, since I'm only free after the 14th anyway (or if you can wait until then?).
Here's my portfolio, btw:

Let me know if you have other projects!

Re: How to find freelance design projects?
Anyone who wants to have a go is more than welcome! We've already had a couple of offers, but more ideas are always welcome.
We have someone who would like to redesign the site, but we thought we'd separate that from the banners and artistic stuff. It will eventually look more like a news site with more stories visible from each country on the front page. We hope.

Sergiu: no big rush, we are fairly slack most of the time anyway so i doubt any decisions will get taken before then - I'll post here if they do....
