Hi,
I am looking for a job in or around the Helsinki area and was wondering if anyone had a suggestions on how I would go about this?
Here's a bit about my background:
I am English with a Finnish partner and two children. They have just moved to Nummela (near Helsinki) and I will be joining them at the beginning of November 2009. My Finnish language skills are fairly basic at the moment. I am not very good at speaking it but do generally get an idea of a conversation I may be listening into. I understand that not being fluent in the Finnish langauge, coupled with the current global economic situation, that it is not going to be very easy finding a job. However, we do have some savings, therefore buying us time to find a job (probably around 1.5 years before we run out of savings)
I have worked in the printing and mailing industry for the last 11 years in England for an Investment company called Fidelity International.
Between 1998 and 2002 I started out in the print and mail department of Fidelity where I would operate the machines that printed and mailed out investment documents to our clients.
Between 2002 until present I moved into the department which deals with the software (PReS - Print Resource Software) that produces these documents. I have had a number of roles in this department which include the following:
- Support Analyst (dealing with customer documentation issues and finding solutions to resolve these)
- Development (making changes to customer documentation via PReS based on a set of requirements given by the Fidelity business)
- Business Analyst (gathering requirements for Fidelity projects, documenting them and handing them over to our developers)
I would prefer to move into a similar type of role in Finland but would be willing to look at other industries too.
Does anyone have any suggestions about effective ways to look at employment in the Helsinki area?
Any help would be much appreciated!
Regards
Steve

Re: Jobs in and around Helsinki??
1- Printing is not a growing market in his digital age.
2- there is an economic crises.
3- Clients for printing work in Helsinki are for 95+% Finnish, i.e. business lingo is Finnish.
You'll have a very hard time to find something in your former profession.
If you have only 1.5 years buffer, you should look for any type of work.

Re: Jobs in and around Helsinki??
I don't have to go into the print industry in Finland.
For the last 7 years I have worked in Support and Business Analyst roles. I am hoping this will assist me in using these skills in other industries away from print.

Theres the deal with finding a niche job. As for finding them the best way is to type your magic words as if someone needs a specialist in a certain software/machinery combination you might pull it through. Though the language is a bit of an issue, kind of depends of the job.

Hi,
If I knew something about printing and that kind of stuff I would get in to the printing of ballots.
It seems like the finnish people have an election every second day.
Best regards

Hello Steve,
If you do decide to try with the printing...
In case you don't know, there's a mid-size printing firm just south of Nummela. I have no idea about whether they have much work, or any vacancies for someone with limited Finnish, but why not give them a try? http://www.karprint.fi/
20 mins north of Nummela, there's another printing firm. It's small and seems old-fashioned, but the guys working there are fairly young and speak English, at least. http://www.painopalvelu.fi/
It really seems that the general employment situation is bad, but you might get lucky.

Cheers for the suggestions guys.
I know it will not be easy getting a job but at least if I get some suggestions it gives me an opportunity of exploring.
Also, I'm flying out to Finland this weekend so any suggestions of what agencies/companies I could send my CV to would be much appreciated! Keep those suggestions coming in!
