Questions on opening a webshop

Post by sabrina_fi » Mon Oct 26, 2009 11:22 pm

I decide to open a webshop. As I am so ignorant in IT, there are some questions unclear, hopefully can get answers from here:
1. server
considering the high labor cost in Finland, I want to hire person to design and maitain the website from my home country, but rent the server from Finland. Is it possible in technique? If opssible, from where can I rent the sever, is it expensive?
(I applied for a .fi domain already)

2. Paypal
Is Paypal a must for the online purchasing that over 300 euro? Or what's the most popular way of online payment?

Thanks so much.

1. Yes. Search for "hosting palvelu". I have heard "good things" about Nebula (they answer e-mail and phone!?!), which seems to offer some e-commerce software too: http://www.nebula.fi/e-commerce.php?setlang=eng

2. My preferred method of payment: Finland either via online bank or bill. Also COD, but as it costs extra, I usually prefer other methods. Abroad: credit card (for the ability to dispute payments and getting money back/seller to problems with MC/Visa). I have paid before delivery by bank transfer, but then I have been really really sure to whom am I paying and have done research about the shop, so this only works for established companies with good reputation and virtually none bad references. I won't touch Paypal with looong stick, but ymmv.

1. Depending on the demands you could even use a normal computer at home if it is connected 24/7 to the net. As long as you don't think in terms of Amazon.com you'll be fine.

Tanks Upphew, I checked the website you recommend, the cheapest package is 205 euro, and after all I need do a lot by myself(I am so so ingorant in IT and willing to use the time to other place). My friend introduced his colleague to me last night, he help people to design and host the website in part time, the quoatation is extremely low, less than 100 euro, even could be 80 euro depend on the complicity. (He located in China) I will use him.
Therefore, the question about server is still there, where can I rent the server in Finland do you know?

You did check other services from Nebula? Like servers?

As rinso said, setting up hosting service is not like inventing gun powder, so there are bazillion companies offering hosting. Go for bigger and/or better known, as it would suck to have servers down and their network cut as the owner and only employee are boozing up at Goom.

If your business is Finland based, i would suggest getting a finish bank payment system installed in your payment options, as most finns will feel safer using their own banking system. Paypal can be used as well, as can reserve and collect at your business address.

Whoever you get to build and set up the site, make sure they don't just set it up, take payment and leave you to it. Cheap is not always the best solution.

You can also use a hosting package anywhere else in the world and just get your domain.fi forwarded to your site root folder in your hosting service webspace.

My hosting is US based and it costs me $59.97 for three months, but it is a developer package.

This finnish company is also reasonable http://www.hostingservice.fi/Web-Hostin ... ages/Union and they can either host your site, or forward the domain to another host. http://www.hostingservice.fi/Web-Hostin ... Domainpark

Hope this helps a little as well.
My hand was well and truly slapped.. :(
