Which union/ unemployment fund can I join?

Post by adamo » Sun Feb 07, 2010 10:27 pm

Hello,

Could you please recommend an umployement fund? I work as an employee and I have a fixed-term contract!
Would it be better to join the union? And in this case which one? How much does it costs? What are the benefits?

Thank you for your advices.

Cheers,

Omar

It's probably YTK or IAET. In which area are you working?

Hi,

In Finland you can freely choose the union to join, if only you fulfill the membership qualifications of a certain union.
In Finland most people choose their union based on their education, even if they would work in a different business area.
There are three employee associations in Finland:

SAK (wage-earners), http://www.sak.fi/english/whatsnew.jsp? ... =1&lang=en
STTK (salaried employees), http://www.sttk.fi/en-GB/
AKAVA (highly educated employees), http://www.akava.fi/en/

Under these main organizations, there are sevaral different trade unions. For example, there is over 20 Akava's affiliates.
In the addition to these, the there is a private fund YTK. Complete list of all trade unions: http://www.tyj.fi/default.asp?id=0&docid=3580. Different unions have different benefits, so you just need to investigate what they have and decide what the services you need are. YTK does not have any benefits. Membership fees are deductable in your personal taxation.

Unemployment benefits are the same for everybody, and level of unemployment compensation is not different in different unions, but membership fees might vary.

First you need to fulfill the membership and employment requirements: http://www.tyj.fi/default.asp?id=110
Entitlement conditions: http://www.tyj.fi/default.asp?id=102
Amount of the unemployment benefits: http://www.tyj.fi/default.asp?id=111

Because I have just got married with Fin citizen who is not Fins, I am working now. If I am unemployed ( I don't think I will be because I am working on my own business), I will get money from Kela for studying Finnish language or any course at the Employment Office, so do I need to join labor union? could you guys give me some advice?

Unions are for workers exploited by capitalists, if you run your own business you're a capitalist exploiting the workers, so the unions are there to fight you  . There is an unemployment fund for enterpreneurs though, but their rules are different.

Thanks for your reply

But I am not the person who owns the business :D . Anyways Just think I am a normal worker, so in my case, should I join the labor union? meanwhile I cam receive daily allowance from Kela if I go to learn Finnish Language or try to learn some course there :P

Union or YTK, to get the unemployment coverage. but if you work then you cannot be on KELA. If you are on KELA you won't be working to get coverage.

I am wondering that sooner or later I have to take Finns course at level 3 to apply for Fins citizen at that time, so I have to stop working therefore I will be on Kela. Do I understand right? Is all the daily allowance same for all union? because I see the fee for pam only aroud only 60€ but Akava Union takes 260€ for joining.

Does the course take more than 3 months as if you quit you get a quarantine.

Whats the use? You have to pay a % of your salary and do you want to sue your family memeber for bad work conditions or go on strike for wages?
Go read "how stuff works" from http://www.ytk.fi/en/ => its now 99 euros a calendar year.
