Hello forum members,
My fiance and I are Americans and will be moving to Finland in August. I will be going to the University of Tampere for a masters program. We are hoping that my fiance will be able to get her residence permit as well. She currently owns a salon in the US and is licensed here with about 9 years experience. Does anyone know what the process is for becoming licensed in Finland? Is there some sort of equivalency test for receiving this license there?
Are there any persons from a Tampere salon on this forum who are interested in hiring an experienced American stylist who has run her own business for 9 years?
Thanks!
License for cutting hair
Re: License for cutting hair
Believe it or not, but afaik there is no licensing needed to cut peoples hair. To call one parturi or kampaaja or parturi-kampaaja might need some studies and/or skills test. You could try to contact http://www.h-b-college.com/ and ask from them, they are private and charge 1400 + vat for the test, but I suppose you would find someone who speaks English from there. And they are located in Tampere.

i don't know for tampere, but in helsinki, the WTC barbers are all foreigners and good! no licence needed and no language there, in fact the finnish owner prefers foreign barbers coz of the hard working, quick turnover nature of these people

Local health officials want to check the premises before you start and then there is the usual stuff related to opening any small business.
For somebody who can read Finnish there would be lot of information here: http://www.schwarzkopf-finland.fi/docs/ ... asusej.pdf

Thanks to everyone for your responses. Everything posted here was really informative. The idea of renting a booth was one that neither one of us had even thought of and takes some of the pressure out of needing to get hired somewhere.
As far as I have read, working in Finland requires a residence permit for someone from the United States. Is it possible to do this kind of work while on a tourist visa?
Thanks again for all of the great information!
