Looking for a job/advice

Post by kohvikann » Wed Jan 29, 2014 1:44 pm

Hello all,

Like many others I am looking for a job, so I thought to ask for advice. My partner moved to Helsinki as he was offered a job here. But this kind of puts me in a tough position as I don't yet know Finnish, and at the same time sitting at home really is not an option (those few days have been driving me mad already). I'm finishing my MA thesis so I'm looking for a part-time job and by profession I'm an art historian that specializes in film. Which is dead end as language is what matters here. In ideal I did hope to find a simple job still connected to the field I like and start learning the language. I did write to Kiasma, Ateneum, and Photography museum and from film the only thing I could think of was Kansallinen audiovisuaalinen instituutti. But no luck. Is there something I'm missing, someone else I could contact?
Also I got my police station appointment at the end of February and I was wondering if I could already go to the job centre somewhere in Helsinki (oh where) and ask for advice seeking a job?
I'm also wondering if they have something in english in ammatillinen koulutus (Vocational education)?
Actually if you know any group gatherings like a film club, opera activists, facebook groups etc that would help me a lot as well, as it would be nice to go out and meet people.

You can go to mol.fi and register yourself as unemployed. If you have the needed type of visa here or smth. But in any case you can visit their office (it is somewhere in Pasial nowadays, check on the web-site).
I think it is going to be difficult to find job with this very profession, even if you know Finnish.
I also think that it is possible theoretically to work in universities even without the language, but I think it is only a theoretical opportunity. I guess the area of art/culture is really "oversuturated" with specialists, and the competition is very high there.

But you always can try, of course! You can try to write a good CV and send it out everywhere possible... The places you already have named + whatever you can find in google. Also depends on what you want to do...

Btw, where are you from originally? And if you are up to going out, I also am up for it! I also am interested in possible opportunities in studying art/working with it.

Hey there Evaphio!
Thank you for your quick reply!
In Estonia (that’s where I’m from) it’s pretty much the same when it comes to culture, so that’s not a big surprise. I kind of had the idea that those two countries might be alike. That’s why I was hoping to start with something simple just connected to arts in general as I can imagine it’s a small circle of people and arts are usually underfunded as well. My partner works as an It Engineer so it’s somewhat easier for him.
Sure we can go out, I’d love to, I’ll message you!

Jaa, no kui podra matkustab lõuna, podra oppid eesti keeld. Siis õpid, või nutat ja õpid.

I think it works the same way coming over, though the Estonian I learned was on the border in Valga ... In Abja or Viljandi people understand me, but in Tallinn people give blank stares even the accent isn't that much off?

Interesting. I think when it comes to my generation (we’re in our late 20s), people in Tallinn (west Estonia) generally understand Finnish better than those who come from the east. The reason for this is that we in the east had more Russian channels, so watching it as a kid helped me learn Russian. Most of my friends in Tallinn got to see Finnish television and so don’t understand Russian, but Finnish is quite logical to them.

There is a possibility that you could have learned a bit of Mulgi dialect ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Estonian_language ), but that's something truly rare these days. Finnish accent for people in Tallinn shouldn't be surprising as I mentioned. But it also depends on what kind of people you stumble on.
