Advice for finding work in BI / DW (3rd Country national)

Post by Rankin » Sun Dec 07, 2014 1:18 am

Hello everyone,

My understanding is that I will be allowed access to the job market based on my qualifications (Degree qualified) for a period of 3 months, then be required to apply for a permit.

Based on this assumption, I have been applying for some positions. I am wondering if anyone has been in a similar position to me, who might be able to offer any advice.

I do not speak Finnish, however I have some rudimentary German and a passion for learning, if that matters.

Thanks for your reply.

I took this from the MIGRI website.

"You may be considered to be a specialist if your work tasks are demanding and require university studies. A salary that is higher than average (gross salary of at least approximately € 3,000 per months) is also an indication of the demanding nature of your duties. In your application, you must prove that you meet these criteria. These criteria are used to evaluate whether you can be considered to be a specialist.
Specialists include, for example, IT experts, experts in a special field who have a university degree, and other persons who have a university degree and whose duties require special expertise."

It seems general practice with most developed EU states to exclude market testing for specialist roles. At least it's that way in Ireland, Germany and possibly Norway and Austria.

At the moment, I am looking for an entry-point to the EU job market; easy access, strong economy and plentiful jobs. Finland certainly fulfilled at least two of those, hence the focus :)

After living here for several years, I can tell you that this is a misguided look. Finland fulfills none of the criteria you have set.

The job market is not easily accessible in Finland. For a mid-to-highly skilled work, the language is a great barrier. For low-level work, you might pass without knowing any Finnish, and the same goes for extremely skilled work.

The economy isn't as strong as you think it is. I'm not an economist, but hearing the news about budget cuts and seeing hundreds of job cuts on daily basis tells me that the economy isn't doing so great.

There aren't plenty of jobs. Jesus, Finns are struggling to find jobs. The unemployment rate is nearly 9%, double that of Germany and almost 2.5 times more than Norway.
Every case is unique. You can't measure the result of your application based on arbitrary anecdotes online.

You sound like an economist, how else you do want to analyse the Finnish economy ? By giving fictitious outlook or figures? You have said it all, it is what it is as you have stated only being optimistic about the future at the moment else there is less gloomy breakthrough at sight, even with the newly unveiled European union budget (no cash, hoping for private sector cash).

No, I just sound like I can put a few words together to form a coherent sentences. If you consider that an economist-level competence, then be my guest.

I'm neither an optimist nor a pessimist. I'm a realist. Times are tough, and they're getting tougher. There's no gain by calling a spade anything other than a spade. The Finnish economy is becoming worse and worse each day; that's a fact.

Because right now for every job application you send in, there are probably 5 unemployed Finns applying against you who tick off every single item and another 50 who only missed one.
I, wholeheartedly, second this.

It is easy when there is common sense and logic to agree to.

Someone explain this logic to me: someone speaking natively English (I suppose) wants to get entry into EU job market and chooses Finland instead of UK or Ireland.
