Post by BowenPoi » Wed Mar 11, 2015 3:05 pm

Hello. I'm from China. Now, I'm a student in Finland.

I'd like to open a Tea House in Helsinki . It will major sell Kongfu Tea with traditional Chinese Tea and some special Tea cooking. I'd like to open my tea house in Kluuvi Helsinki with about 50 to 80 m2 space. In this year , I can only have 20K euros now, but i can have much more in next two years.

There are some questions hope some people can tell me:

1.Where should I register the Tea House (government office)

2.How much money needed?(rent, decorate and so on)

3.if it is necessary to find some Finish people to be one of Shareholder?

4.How the Finnish people thinking about the Chinese traditional tea?

Hope to get many other different kind of advise from you guys. Thanks

A few here:

You need to have permanent EU residency status to register a company in Finland. So yes, you would have to find an EU resident to register the business. You can register a company at http://www.prh.fi Find more details on their website. You need 8500e capital to register a limited company, but you might decide to choose a different company statute such as a partnership.

If you are a student, you should contact the StartUp school on your campus for more details on entrepreneurship in Finland (I think nearly every campus has a business incubator these days). They will give you advice.

Other details can be found on Enterprise Finland's webpages.

It is difficult to say how much money you would need to start the business. I guess the rents in the Kluuvi mall are quite high - but I can't even find the name of the company that owns the mall, there is very little info on their website. Generally speaking, shopping malls make quite strict regulations about standards of fixtures and fittings etc whereas if you rented a small independent unit somewhere you could decorate it more or less how you wish (ie with secondhand furniture etc). Units in malls tend to be rented by large international chains (Kluuvi is a bit different in that respect but it still relies mostly on the big brands).

A couple of years ago some of my students worked on a business plan for a (hypothetical) tea room and they estimated their start-up costs at just over 40K€. That only included around 5K€ for marketing, which wouldn't go very far. They estimated rent payable in advance at around 11K€ but I can't remember where that info came from.

I suggest you snoop around the competition first. Then do some serious planning (eg Business Model Canvas etc).

When I last time googled rents for some aspiring entrepreneur they were 25€/m2 and upward.
