Re: I AM LOOKING FOR A JOB
Are you the same guy I talked to about 5 months ago? If yes, were there any changes in your situation?
I remember that you didn't have hands-on IT technical experience (programming, sysadmining, scripting, scanning tools, etc.). Has that situation changed? Have you acquired any knowledge/skills in those areas?
If you have, let me know. The same opportunity I told you about is still available.
If you're a different guy, do you have hands-on IT technical experience (programming, sysadmining, scripting, scanning tools, etc.)? If yes, let me know so I can call you about a decent work opportunity.

Hello. The same guy. At the moment I am only reading a book in pentesting. My IT Security studies have not started yet. No progress. Thank you very much.

Almost 5 months without any tangible technical progress?!
I really hope you don't get this the wrong way, but this is gonna be a harsh advice. I really hope it shocks you into a better life plan. Get ready.
You're doing it wrong! By "it" I mean life in this field. This field moves fast.. very fast.
Since 5 months ago? Libraries have died, new frameworks were born, 20-30 highly critical RCEs have been published, at least 2 new InfoSec companies in Finland have started aggressively hiring talents, some InfoSec companies disappeared (N-Sense), other companies started consultancy departments, and so much more. While you? No progress.
Wake up, my friend. You won't go anywhere with this. You know what you could have done in 5 months? Learned Python and Ruby, wrote a few Metasploit modules, made some pull requests on some security-related GitHub repos, and whipped out a new CV/LinkedIn profile. If you did that, you know how much you'd be making today? Not less than 4000 euros in a very good position in an IT security company.
I hope your next 5 months won't be like the 5 months that have passed. Oh, and save the excuses for yourself.. I'm not your parent.
Every case is unique. You can't measure the result of your application based on arbitrary anecdotes online.
Re: I AM LOOKING FOR A JOB
Um... wow.
I realise you don't know Beep_Boop from a bar of soap, but if he saw enough in you to wave that carrot and give you that advice, it's a crying shame to squander that opportunity. You have a maths degree, if you can't learn Python in a month there is something wrong (I'm thinking serious Mario Kart addiction or got a new girlfriend and forgot how to adult). As for the rest, yeah I'll leave that for nerds to understand
Get on that. Stat.

Re: I AM LOOKING FOR A JOB
Hey, I'm really sorry for butting into someone else's topic, but I have a question for Beep_Boop. Do you have any advice of a person with MSc in Physics, I'm trying to get into IT stuff because academia here doesn't seem to be hiring much these days I know Python and C++, but I haven't had luck when applying for internships/trainee positions. I used Python/C++ mostly for small scale data analysis - reading data, parsing from files if needed, doing some calculations on them etc, but it seems to me far from anything real software developers do, so I'm at loss what is smartest thing I can learn on my own, to do with my programming skills.Beep_Boop wrote:Wow.albatro wrote:My IT Security studies have not started yet. One more apology to albatro.

@JK_Ironak
I think roger_roger made very good points. I'll stress some and add some of my own.
- I'd start by polishing your CV by adding the things you've done. If you want to get in the IT field, then highlight and bring up the IT side of what you've done and lower the exposure of the physics stuff. Here's an example: You wrote a small Python application that reads abrasiveness analysis data files from test lab machines and then presents meaningful information as graphs. That sounds cool, but you need to bring up the programming challenges that faced you, the things you solved, the things you learned, etc. Apply the same concept to other things you've done.
- Build a GitHub presence. If you do coding and you want to make good money out of it, you need some contribution history and online code samples. Upload your code to GitHub repos, contribute to other open source repos, and just be active there.
- Learn JavaScript and some JavaScript framework. Node.js is good, Angular is good, and whatever is hip these days is good. Helsinki it the a JavaScript city; lots of companies doing cool web stuff, and they're always looking for cool people to do those cool stuff.
- Attend small conferences/meetups. HelsinkiJS is a good meetup for learning and contacts in the coding scene in Helsinki https://meetabit.com/communities/2
- Don't stagnate. Learn from OP's mistake.
- Finally: Accept that there's an element of luck in every success story. If your attempt doesn't work, maybe you're doing something wrong, but maybe it's all right and you're just not lucky this time, so don't give up. Honestly, it's just like talking to girls in a bar; if your goal is to get laid, then just talk to as many as possible and eventually you'll hit it off with someone. Your chance of finding a job might be 0.001%, but all this means is that you need to try more and more.

Thanks to you both, and I joined the HelsinkiJS
Re: I AM LOOKING FOR A JOB
It looks like a newcomer can't send a PM,
Beep_Boop I have been lurking these boards but your message above made me wonder, do you work for a security company?
I have a couple questions (feel free to PM me) do you hire non-CS graduates (self taught c++ and comfortable with python, scripted in perl and matlab formally though)
Interested heavily on pentesting/security/reverse engineering field (learning some x86 assembly but not really something id say i'm even basic at yet).
I have however neglected web frameworks thus far (although i can understand javascript, just have not built anything with it yet ) although i played with the android SDK (have a minor app, no DB on it though).
Well i guess my rant is over, but i have no work experience in the field and clearly I'm interested just have not found an entry level job for this. (at this point it seems like i need to have written dex2jar or something before HR gives me a chance).
I'm UK based currently so EU would not be an issue.
Thanks in advance

@MetaDevUK
(When I say "we", I mean me and the people I know in this field who have the power to hire. This is not an official statement about my company)
We care about what you can do, what you've done, and what you're willing to learn to do a lot more than we care about your degree. In fact, every year, we take a several people who have 0 work experience and 0 relevant education.
When someone like that applies, we shift the focus to trying to find signs that this person has interest in the field. Show us your CVEs, CTF results, vuln. report blogs, bug bounty mentions, your open source contributions, etc. With that, we know that you're passionate about this field. Some hands-on certs like OSCP/OSCE are a huuuuuge plus.
If you have reverse engineering knowledge like you said and some basic knowledge about pentesting, I might be able to hook you up with a lead for an entry position in the UK.

@Beep_Boop & @Roger_roger
wow thanks for the advice guys, i will definitely take it to heart. I will begin some work on Javascript and look into ECMAScript as i do understand web development is a more beginner friendly field.
I appreciate the honesty and as i mentioned I have focused on learning the fundamentals (mostly cpp and a little C), currently learning some reverse engineering through udemy (the beaglebone creator course) and will start the pentesting courses on pluralsight as soon as I'm done with that one. I have not participated in a CTF or gotten a bug bounty yet however. I am glad to hear that offensive security certs are actually well regarded (as I have heard far to many times that certs can make you look worse on reddit etc).
After I'm done with pluralsight I think ill try to tackle this one fully http://www.cs.fsu.edu/~redwood/OffensiveSecurity/ . Well I have to say that cybersecurity seems to be the most exiting field which is why i focused my learning efforts on C/C++ to begin with, and I wish I had chosen CS as a degree in the past but that is a step that I hope will just be a minor setback.
Well I would love if you could give me any leads (although Finland leads would be greatly appreciated too, since someone I care about will be working there starting september).
Well sorry for the long rant, but it was really nice to get such a complete response from both of you.

Re: I AM LOOKING FOR A JOB
I'm experienced with Python, some Perl, and some C.
What are the chances of finding a programming job further north, outside of the Helsinki area altogether?

Sigh. Quite disappointing. But I guess not really surprising, ultimately.roger_roger wrote:1%
Unless I really solidify my C knowledge and start my own company, like for video game development or something.
Then I could base it wherever I want.
But until that point, there's quite a long way to go for me.
