Post by Da Yooper » Wed Jun 18, 2003 5:55 am

 Hello, I am looking for some direction in where to start to learn the Finnish Language. I would like to learn on-line if possible, but any direction would be great.

While I could never claim to be an expert, I searched long and hard online and had no luck. In my opinion, you have to be able to *hear* Finnish being spoken, write it down, and see it. All three are important. I learn the most by repeating after a tape! "Teach Yourself Finnish" is without question my favorite of the several books I purchased. I also bought a Finnish/English and English/Finnish dictionary and a phrase book just in case I really need it, but the tapes are the way to go, if you can't take an actual class!
Once you have mastered the book/tape self paced course, then I'd try speaking with Finnish people and listening to the radio online and seeing how much you understand :-) I also download Finnish songs off of WinMX for the same reason.
That's just my method... probably very flawed!!!

You may add two on-line courses on Finnish grammar, the best I think. It is all in Finnish:

Hi

Don't forget to check out 'Tavataan Taas' course run by Helsinki University. It is quite user friendly, and has audio for almost all the text.

Best of luck!
